Fender Jazz.
I've owned a few of them and my current Victor Bailey is by far my fav.
My least favourite was a Gibson SG bass. I hated that club.

Everyone thinks they like Rick basses until they actually play one! Terrible tiny frets that wear down in a few months, bound fingerboards so they're really difficult to refret, weird truss rod adjustment routine, just ... ugh. And the pickups have almost no output.

Fender Jazz every time for me.

Fender Jazz & Precision with a slight nod to the Jazz.

I had an Alembic that was kinda nice too and one of the guys I jam with plays a great sounding Sadowsky bass.

Fender Precision. Single or Split Coil is fine. The only bass for me.

Musicmaster Bass, I have both an original Fender and a Squier reissue. Being "vertically challenged" as I am the short scales are far more comfortable for me. I realize these are the "economy" Mustangs but I kind of lucked my way into the first one and now it's become my baby so no need to upgrade.

I also have an SX Short Scale Jazz bass that's really sweet, maple neck is nice.

I'm a big fan of the Spector shape, fairly traditional take on the body, but with added curves. Those NS shaped bodies are beautifully carved and ever so comfortable.

Early ('51-'56) Fender Precision Bass (and their renamed descendants, the '68-'71 Telecaster Bass) are my favorites. Simple, clean lines, classic tone...great bass guitars.

However, the '71-'79 Telecaster Bass, with the big humbucker in the neck position and the Thinline-esque pcikguard hold a place dear in my heart (possibly due to Dusty Hill's fantabulous use of those instruments).

A really cool verson of either of those basses is the bass I own: the Ampeg Big Stud.
The body and pickguard are very similar to the '51 P-bass, and have a chrome-covered Tele-like pickup in the middle of the body, but with a second pickup reminiscent of a four-string P-90 (in the bridge position).
They have headstocks nearly as large as the body of a Steinberger, with 2x2 tuning keys.
A "laminated" (read: "plywood") body.
The three I have seen in my life (mine included) are supposed to be an aged "natural" finish, but the color is affectionately referred to as "Dog Urine Yellow".
They were made in Japan from 1973 to 1975.
They're awesome!

Aside from these, I think the higher-end Ibanez Soundgear Basses are excellent, for the money...

The only bass I ever owned is a P-Bass, but I bet I'd like the Fender Jazz Bass more. Actually, I'm still looking hard at a baritone guitar.

Well, these are ones that I've either owned, or actually played:

Fender-wise, it was my 1990's Japanese 50's reissue, white with the gold pick guard. It was the best playing Fender I ever played, but foolishly got rid of because I was a dumb $@! 23-year old acting on some impulse. I wish I still had it, or at least one like it with the same feel.

Non Fender-wise. I had twice an opportunity to play an Ovation Magnum series bass, many moons ago, and loved that thing. It was the one that had all of the knobs and sliders. That thing could put out some low end. Naturally, I was broke both of the times I came across this bass. A close contender was a Guild B-302 bass, that I came across around the same time period. I thought that was cool, and loved the way it played. Yet, once again...

I think the most interesting basses that I played (on the same day, in fact) was an 8-string Rickenbacker and 8-string Ibanez bass. The Rickenbacker was a nicer instrument (well, it cost at the time $920, compared to the Ibanez at $275,) but both were cool. I've never seen either again, anywhere, except for the Rickenbacker in a picture on their website. I guess they are rare.
