Hey, I am a University student in the UK currently studying Popular Music. This is my last year now and I have to produce a dissertation, so my chosen topic is on the sustain properties of an electric solid-bodied guitar, and more specifically, the neck joint and the bridge type.

If you could all take the time to fill in this short questionnaire I would be entirely grateful!

Thanks for your time :)

Mike

cheers!

Done also, I suspect he'll get a lot of the same answers from most of us. Although to me in practice it matters very little.

Survey was fun. But sustain is so much more than neck joints and bridge styles!

This is what I typed when I explained myself when it comes to neck joints.

"Neck-through body should have the most sustain because there's no glue or other hardware (like screws and mounting plates) that would dampen the harmonic vibrations produced by the strings. But in the real world, most guitar players notice little to no difference in between a set-neck and neck-through sustain differences. Since the neck-body joint is just part of the overall equation when it comes to sustain, even a bolt-on guitar could have sustain that rivals set-neck or neck-through guitars."

If I'm wrong then I'll gladly stand corrected! :)

That's basically along the same lines as the comments I left.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Did it. Interesting topic for dissertation. I remember writing about the (still emerging) Vintage Guitar market for a marketing class in 1980.
