Some things never change.

This morning my wife told me that I needed a haircut because my hair is getting too long (and it's short!). I don't get it. It's okay for her to have long hair :?:

Can't complain though. She bought me the guitar and amp.

Bump. An old thread for any new members that still have hair up top lol. Yes I just cut mine to peach fuzz level for summer. I do miss having a full head of hair though.

i used to play around with various lengths but as soon as i went 1/2 military cut a few years ago that is where it stayed. I have tried numerous times to "let it grow" but the joy of not caring as i get out of the shower each day and jumping in my car to go to work just outweighs any cool factor of long hair. plus Florida is balls soup about 11 months out of the year so yeah... no thanks

Since about 6th grade I've had long hair, with brief periods of short when necessary.

I started working data processing in the banking industry 1979, while I worked nights I kept my long hair. After a while I realized if I was ever to move to days I would have to lose the long hair.

Since then most of it fell out!

I cut it whenever it gets caught in my belt.
Mind, these days, there are quite a few silver strains. Like half of it.

60s, parents wouldn't allow it, 70s, 80s, 00s and 10s jobs wouldn't allow it. The irony was that I was in a band from 67 - 76 that was paying a lot more than the jobs I had then. But (unless you incorporated and all that), it's hard to put playing in a band on rent applications or auto loan papers. My employers over the years have never had a problem with my "just over the ears, just over the collar" style. I talked my mom into that just after she agreed to my buying a Mustang guitar and amp. She was debating letting me grow it a bit when ...

... my high school job manager suggested I grow a mustache and he also favored growing the hair out a bit (this was 1968). Reason: a NYS labor inspector refused to believe I was anywhere near 16 due to a baby face and some of the store's customers had made comments about how weird I looked.

I briefly had seriously long hair summer/fall 1971. With no "regular" job at the time and the band making more than enough to live on, I let the hair grow. But some trouble in the band saw me back in a "get a haircut" job once again. It remained short until 1990. I'd taken a job with a vendor in the movie biz, and one of my functions was to train client personnel in my company's software. A couple weeks in, the boss came to me one Friday and said ...

... a couple long time clients called and told me you're great. Genius level ... but ... maybe could you skip going to the barber say once every other week. And lose the blue or gray pinstripes, white shirt, red and blue tie look. What I'm saying is you need to "fit" and perhaps your look was perfect for your former east coast corporate job -- but now you're on the west coast and in the entertainment industry! I might be one of the few 40 year olds encouraged to grow very long hair and a beard for a job that didn't directly involve acting!

That lasted until I was promoted to Asst Controller/User Report Developer about 2 years later. Back to the barber, back to my old look.

And now here I am at 62 3/4 and I've defiantly let it grow over the middle of my ears, beard is back. Girlfriend says I'm WAY overdue to visit the barber but hey, we older people can be defiant and I'm probably going to skip it for the 4th week in a row (GASP)! No job problem though: my boss, an 80s Hair Band rocker, has hair down to the middle of his back now.

But (SIGH) it will all go again when I visit my parents (both 86) this fall. Wouldn't want them to think I'd finally turned into one of those "San Francisco Hippies" after all these years

Well, for about a few years (it took awhile to grow, too) until around 2011 I had hair that went down almost to my waist. That can get problematic when it get caught in the car door. :P I chopped it off and kept it short until the past couple of months when I decided to say eff it and I'm going to grow it back out again. Not as long, though. That was ridiculous. Mark Farner would have been proud, though. :P

The problem I have is I have wavy/curly hair so it has to go through what I call it's "arsehole" phase that it's a pain to deal with (tempting me to chop it) until it grows out enough to where it's not sticking out everywhere. I also have a newsboy cap and I get this Brian Johnson of AC/DC thing going on when I wear it. I think by the end of the year it should grow out enough to where I can wear it in a tail.

That depends on where you are. Many if not most places have had gender equality laws in place for several decades now, where they can't demand that women wear skirts or dresses and can't demand that men have short hair. Unless they make the same requirements of everyone regardless of gender, it risks running afoul of the law. What's good for the goose is good for the gander.

I remember wearing a hair net at one consulting job back in the early 90s. That was okay - it was a workplace safety thing, with printing machines that could grab hair. But I have never cut my hair for a job since the day I left the Air Farce.

I'd love to have long hair, but there isn't much one can do when you have a reverse Mohawk. :D

This is a topic that I really get hot under the collar about, so I'll try to keep cool. I get so sick and tired of all this men can't do this and men can't do that. Men have to wear this and men can't wear that. They talk about freedom of choice in many disciplines, and women have a major edge over us - do they not. I hate it when someone tells me that in order to go here or there or get a job or do that job they tell me that I have to wear one of those f'in suites and ties. "Civilian Male Uniforms". Yet women get so much choice. Just watch the news on TV, sports telecasters etc., and you see the man having to wear that hideous uniform where women can wear just about whatever they want. I know I've got off topic, but all this s__t steams me. That's why I loved the 60's. More freedom of expression back then. I hated the establishment then, and I damn well hate it today. Society is bad enough without having to be dictated to by our stupid culture.

Anyway, I hope I wasn't too out of order here. I'm still one of the new kids on the block and I don't want to ruffle anyone's feathers.

I've tried and can't do it... It bugs me.

1979: Graduated H.S. and went straight into the US Coast Guard. Reported to boot camp in Cape May, NJ with hair all the way down to my shoulders, wearing a pair of jeans with holes in the knees, and also wearing a Led Zeppelin t-shirt. Ooooo, they had fun with me that first day!

Today: After serving a career as a "Coastie" and retiring, I spent my later years in the I.T. industry and tried to grow my hair long. Once it got over my ears, I freaked out and couldn't handle it. I can grow a moustache and beard (beard - annually in the fall), but not the long hair. Oh well...

Edit: Can someone tell me where this gray hair came from, please? Also, I was always fit and trim, 6'0" and 180 lbs. Now I'm still 6'0" but I'm 208. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?!?!

I keep finding long hair, but none of it came from me. It's my wife's or my son's.

I'm 6'1" and had/have the same weight statistics as you. I'm trying to get back to my youthful weight, but I just can't seem to leave the dinner table early enough. :D
