Well, folks... with the exception of YouTube, my e-mail, and hanging out on here, I'm adopting what I'm calling an anti-social media stance. I'm disgusted by the big-brotheresque feel of facebook, twitter, and the like. I recently did a search for myself and was horrified at the number of sites collecting and sharing what I consider to be personal information. I'm willing to accept the blame for some of it, but it's mostly just a heap of steamin' you know what. My address, my phone number, my parents names.... and on and on.

Will I miss hearing about what a lame time some old schoolmate had in line at Walmart... I doubt it. Will this attempt to remove so much of myself from the web help.... I doubt that too but I'm willing to try. Canceling my YouTube acct. will be hard because I love sharing my videos but I'm considering that too.

At least I'll still have the forum to vent about a bunch of stuff nobody wants to hear about.

No Fecebook for me either. There may be upsides for some people, but my already jaded view of the average American would likely not improve reading the regurgitant that passes for conversation.

If it brings joy or function to someone, then so be it.

As an average American, I take no offense to either of the last two posts... but it sounds like someone needs to take themselves less seriously.

I don't understand why anyone would be on Facebook. I'm not on it or will ever be on it but that's me.

I served on a local car club council that decided to setup Facebook accts. to communicate (the one meeting I didn't attend), so, in my absence, I got one.

Never use it and don't participate with the council much anymore.

I do have 7 friends though... :D

cheers!

In all fairness, it was fun connecting with some (and there's a HUGE emphasis on "some") old friends and schoolmates. There's a reason some people stay connected and some don't. I'm just sick of the rambling diatribes and verbal vomit that some feel compelled to share.

The other, and perhaps more serious reason for canceling my account, is that I'm in the process of finishing up school to become a teacher and it's well known in the field that before getting hired it's likely that any social media sites are looked at. The last thing I need is for a principal to see some yokel I used to know 20 years ago smashing beer cans on his forehead around a campfire.

Yes, your eloquence makes my point for me. Thank you, Jeebus.

Always enjoyed your videos, Jamguy.

I've been a fairly active facebooker for about 5 or 6 years or so. I have to admit I've been seriously considering deleting my profile. I already delete any tags of myself in pics that others post and none of my personal info is on there and my profile pic has been obscured with photoshop to prevent face recognition bots reconising me but it is still becoming annoying with all the spam advertising and "suggested posts" since it went public. The "ticker tape" on the right side is also a cause for concern as it seems to let friends of friends see what you are doing but only in real time. There appears to be no record of your actions that they can find later but if they happen to catch it as it happens it's all out there. I can only assume it will get worse with time. I don't do Twitter. I have a few of our board members on my friends list but in reality we don't connect much on FB.

I think one of the most annoying thing about FB is all the old friends you haven't seen in a long time who became weirdos posting their dumb opinions and political agendas. Another annoying thing is the kids posting stuff that is WAY too personal and thinking nothing of it. Stuff like, "Why did you break up with me? I'm so lonely now." I always express my concern to them when they do it but they don't stop.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

friendface since 2006, added Solid Body Love Songs in 2009, removed age on the recomendation of a fellow guitarist in 2010. Am friends with Brad and many other Forum members there. I check messages daily. Otherwise I'm here.

Thanks... it doesn't seem worthwhile to can that account just yet. A few months ago they prompted me to link my google, gmail, etc to YouTube and just use one name, my real name. It sounded reasonable until I thought about it but it was too late by then, I'd already clicked yes. Even though I've changed it back, all of the videos that were already posted now have my name attached and are still coming up under internet searches. YouTube says that's just the way it goes. So it makes little difference now. Any future video posts however won't be searchable by my real name.

It's not like I think my music videos would prevent me from getting a job but being a teacher (especially an elementary teacher) and having a bunch of stuff pop up with your face on it when one of your kids searches for your name is just asking for trouble. Prior to deciding to be a teacher I hadn't given it much thought.

Well as far as the internet goes, I guess it is one of the last frontiers that are very lawless.

These days, if you cut yourself off from things like this you are pretty much going to leave yourself in the dark from the rest of the media and the world. Believe it or not, Facebook is now a recognised form of communication. Like email, posting letters, phone calls and texts, it is very appropriate to use Facebook or Twitter if you have a message to get out to the masses or just a friend.

With personal information, you are in direct control of that. If you don't want certain info about you on the internet, well all you have to do is change your privacy settings. It's that simple.
With regard to information held on the internet, it doesnt go away- even if you delete accounts- so be very aware of that. So really, if you haven't changed privacy settings but your not pleased about what info there is out there about you- well, I'll re-iterate what Ive said- You are in control.

Some people get very concerned also about 'location privacy' and I'll use Apple iPhone as an example and the tracking on iPhones Apple does. I work in the industry and I was asked about this all the time & I ask people what on earth do people worry about this? is Apple or Google going to hunt you down like game? I think not.

Remember, what info you give out is your own decision. Facebook, Twitter & Google are allowed to do what they want with your info- but its really up to you how public or private you want it to be.
