Based on the number of LPs, CDs, VHS, DVDs, and tapes,
I would have to say the Jimi Hendrix Experience.

Jimi Hendrix is lengendary. What an amazing, technical, soulful, brilliant player. Losing him shook the music world and it took many years to recover. There was noone else like him before or after (though many have tried and even come close). I sometimes think that had he lived he would have spawned the virtuoso-blues age and we'd be playing much differently (what if's are useless platitudes, imho otherwise).

Here's the man who defined Fender Stratocaster from the late '60's until the early 80's. I still guage a good Strat by it's bluesy sound on the neck position for playing "Wind Cries Mary" and other Hendrix songs.

Sorry for the effusive engagement.

No, that's not Yes, that's Pink Floyd. ;P

Not many mentions of Yes. Some great stuff by these guys. And Steve Howe is an amazing guitarist.

I watched Yes' Montreux DVD today. Howe is incredible.

That is a cool pic of Pink Floyd. I have gotten more into their music over the last couple of years. I saw Gilmour's latest live DVD recently, and he still has "it."

I love 70's prog. Been to several Yes concerts. Just listened to the Gates of Delerium yesterday. An amazingly talented band.

I got into a lot of obscure (and not so obscure) 70's prog in the last few years: Ekseption, Trace, Gentle Giant, National Health, Focus, Rare Bird, PFM, Argent, Badger, Cressida, Caravan, Nektar, Sky ...

To me that pinnicle of rock. But most didn't like it up there hence Punk and Disco.

Here's the best resource I know of for prog. www.progarchives.com/

They've got damn near every prog band from every country listed alphabetically. Each bands page has full tracks to listen to. I really like that site.

The 60's were sort of an infusion of rock-n-roll, blues, and folk. Musicality was still fermenting. By the end of the 60's, there were some incredible bands and musicians emerging. In the 70's, there was a renaissance of music - blues and rock were rampant, metal and punk were born, jazz became mainstream, sounds were explored to the limits, (disco was born and died - yay). This led into the late 70's/early 80's music which launched virtuoso guitar, heavy metal, and other styles. And a host of talent followed - even if overshadowed by 'New Wave' crap to some extent.

There is defintely not a drought of good music at any given time - it is just how popular and accessible it is. The governing bodies (dia-RIAA) and populace are sometimes distracted by shiny objects when real talent lurks all over the place. These days, with iTunes and self-promoting/self-recording artists, we'll have to search deeper to get past the popular crapola. The quality stuff is still there!

Guns N Roses by far.
The old days though when Steven, Izzy, Duff, Axl and SLASH were there.
