I bought the paid version of Mixcraft. It works pretty well. I've also used an earlier version of Cubase and it was pretty good as well.

I own the omega lexicon and like it becuase it allows the latency issue to not be one. It is powered by the USB connection that connects it to the computer. Mine came with Cubase LE5. For the price, I am happy with it. If I liked Cubase more, I might use the Lexicon too. Once I get the hang of Cubase it will get used more.

Did you get the Cubase software along with the unit?... Just asking because it's supposed to come with it.
You can also download the user's manual if you don't have one.
Most of the home recording devices have on-board effects you can apply to whatever tracks you're recording. Some people like to record everything dry and add effects later.
Myself... I prefer to have everything sound the way I want it while I'm recording, but that feature is not available on most inexpensive devices such as the one I own, and possibly the one you own.
Most of the time, you're only able to apply an effect to one track at a time.
The hardware should allow you to record one or more tracks simultaneously. I own a Zoom R-16 which allows 8 tracks to record simultaneously, but an effect can only be used on one or two at a time.
The Cubase software allows different effects to be added to all the tracks simultaneously, for final mix, and then has other applications available for mastering.
There's a lot to it, but if you're just in it to lay something down and get it out there for people to hear, the basics are pretty easy.
There are forums out there also where you can get a lot of useful information from people using the same stuff.

I use a Lexicon Lambda which came with Cubase LE and the Lexicon reverb plug-in that can be used only with Cubase. After using ACID for years (the DAW, not LSD  ), I found the Cubase learning curve to be steep. Sony still makes a lite version of ACID Pro called Music Studio with lots of features and a good-sized loop library for under $70.

I've never tried the Lexicon interfaces. These days I'm using a Tascam US200 interface with Logic or GarageBand.

I also have a Korg PX5D in the signal chain for amp/cabinet/pickup modeling.

I also use the Lexicon Lambda and Cubase LE and I have been completely happy with both the interface unit and Cubase. Yes, it took me a while to get up to speed and learn a lot of the shortcuts that make the software easier to handle, but once I got there, I was quite content.

I have made literally thousands of recordings, ranging from 8-12 track originals to simple two-track stereo recordings of the backing tracks that I perform with. It seems the newer versions of even Cubase LE make you jump through a few more registration hoops to get the software onto your computer.

I'm using Shure SM's 57 & 58. Serviceable, reliable, relatively inexpensive.

Check out the MXL Studio 1 USB Mic

It's a portable condenser mic that connects to your computer via USB. MXL boasts that it's 'plug-and-play' and that's no joke. No install discs, no drivers, no preamps, mixers or extra gear, nice.

I plugged it in, made a few adjustments in my sound preferences and voila, ready to go. You'll be hard pressed to find a USB mic in this price range that delivers like this one.

Thanks, Mike. I would like to try something different and I'll take a closer look at this one. I keep buying new bits and pieces of gear but I have less and less time to use them. :(
