Personally I have always stored my guitars in their cases (if they have one) when not in use, but lately I want an option that lets me display them.

What do you use?

I am leaning more towards guitar stands since I can move them around and they won't be as permanent as hanging them on the wall etc. Looking to possibly make something myself. I would like to have them on individual stands, not on a long rack like you might see on stage or in the store.

Anyone have any good recommendations? (nitro friendly)

I was thinking I could make some really cheap from modified coat racks.... displaying 2 guitars per rack, one on front face, and one on back face.

Anyone have any simple wood work plans?

Maybe not what you want as a response, but here goes..

I have no idea what sort of collection of instruments you are currently holding onto but for sure the cases really are the best place for them when they're not being used.

Just consider the climate you live in can cause a lot of irreversible side effects unless you are a bit meticulous on controlling RH levels and UV rays in the room you are planning for this.

I can tell you for sure, that any guitars I've seen where the owners keep them out in this manner, eventually have unplayable instruments.

for example, one of my buddies has what was a very nice Gibson ES339 that he got about 10 / 12 years ago. The neck is so badly skewed now, with binding cracks at every fret due to the fretboard shrinking in the drier winter months,, it's unplayable. he paid over 3k for this, and it's not playable. it's been on a wall hanger since he bought it with no regard to humidity control.

Acoustic guitars are even more affected bu this. he has two Taylors, the action is horrendous on both of them. I was with him when he bought them they played great..

not anymore.

Just sayin...
Without consideration to the environment, you could be doing more harm than good to your instrument.

I have 17 guitars, and yea, they'd make fantastic display items for my studio, but they are in the cases when I'm not using them.

Hi guys: I agree with everything KidBlast said.

But.

A stupid but big reason to own guitars is to simply gaze at them on their stands and enjoy the disgusting feeling of possessive joy that causes. Shameful, I know, but anyway, I find my Hercules stands are by far the best for this purpose. A good advantage of their neck grip system is that you can hang guitars with nitro finishes without worry of damage to the lacquer from rubber contact. And also you can leave the guitar with the lead plugged in, and when you go to grab it the cable doesn't snag the way it sometimes does with the Kwik Lok type stands.

Cheers - C

Unless I'm playing them, none of my guitars leave the case. I also keep a little humidifier in my acoustic case because the winter air is so dry. I have one A-shaped stand that fits all my guitars except for my Flying V. I have all parts that contact the guitars covered with cotton fabric from an old t-shirt. I had one guitar (a Les Paul Special) that was burned through the nitro because the previous owner kept it on a stand with the rubber tubing. The pics below are of the before & after. Nitro is a cool finish, but it's delicate.

Agree with KidBlast !

I keep my Epi AJ200 on a stand so it is readily at hand, but it only cost me $150 and there's nothing special about it. If this takes a toll, I go out and get another.

But the Strat, the Heritage H-535, the Tele, even my Applause and Uke live in their cases when not being played. I use small in-case humidifiers on the Uke, the H-535 and the Applause too.

cheers!

Here's my solution......

I store the cases vertically in a closet.

I am thinning my herd so I don't have too many to store... maybe I will just leave them in the cases when not in use since I still need to store the cases somewhere anyways. I regularly use all my instruments now so nothing should go to waste sitting there.

I'm with Arjay all the way on this! I keep my guns in a safe, but my guitars are hanging on the wall or sitting on stands.

This idea that guitars should ALWAYS be in their cases if you aren't playing them is just absurd to me. If you are that worried about your guitars, better run down to the bank and see if they have any unused vault space.

Image

I have a dedicated Music Room, so that probably helps. No sunlight, no smog and carefully controlled humidity at all times. I own 70 guitars right now and 20 of them are displayed at all times. Yeah, the rest are in their cases in the closet, but only because I don't have room to have them all out.

Image

That's an old picture of The Closet. Right now, there isn't room to squeeze one more guitar in there either.

That room puts the groove into tongue-and-groove. :D

CRGuit and Arjay,

Those rooms are fantastic, Nicely done... and gorgeous collection of gear there.

but here's the point I was pushing in my original post:
Without consideration to the environment, you could be doing more harm than good to your instrument.

You HAVE the environment -- you can do this without worrying about the long term effects of climate change and it's effect on the instrument.

Without that, (which really don't quite have yet) call me crazy, I keep em cased except on a day off or a saturday/sunday when I'll grab 4 or 5 and keep em out for maybe a weekend.

I keep my 39 guitars in their cases in the basement. I bought a inexpensive digital humidity gauge at Home Depot and made sure it never goes below 45%. I keep a Esquire copy on a stand, it's the one I usually play.

2 stands (like open guitar cases) with 7 axes each.

Now, after reduction of my collection, I only use 1 plus 2 single stands.

I just use the cheapo hangers from sam ash, they've been up for over 2 years and have never had any problems.... I am a litttle tiny bit concerned about the "environment" the guitars are in... they sit right by my fridge. livin on the edge, i tell you. I wonder if it's doing any damage. that would suck... but then again my 3 guitars are not million dollar museum pieces, either.
