does anybody buy them?

while trying out a hot rod 3 and a blues deluxe reissue, i was told by the sales guy that this "qualifies" for the extended warranty at around a hundred bucks. when i said that the fender warranty (5 years transferrable right?), he tells me how it would cover dropping the amp and all kinds of other stuff.

i tell him this will be used 95% of the time at home, and he keeps telling me that i'll be sorry. what good is the factory warranty?

please mr. big box store-if you want my business, stop giving me this story.

if you do have a good reason for me to get the warranty, please share. end of rant

They're not really extended warranties... they're insurance policies.

The Stores make big bucks on them (which is why they push them so hard), and the issuer makes money because more go unredeemed than those having claims against them.

Yea... if by chance yours fails outside the warranty disclaimers or warranty period, it can be a good thing.

But the issuers know that this is unusual. If it were the other way, they'd either; Hike up the cost of the policies... or not issue them.

Also, it can be VERY difficult to have these honored if something does go wrong. The companies issuing them have all sort of requirements which have to be met, and it can take quite a bit of time to get it all settled. They look for ways to deny the claim.

In most cases, those buying them don't get the value out of them.

Still, for many, it's like buying a little piece of mind and they don't mind the extra cost.

Personally, I don't buy them.

cheers!

I never, ever buy extended warranties... on anything. Extended warranties are pure gravy for those who sell them. They are almost never used or needed and the reason they are pushed so hard by store employees is that they get a nice commission on every one they sell. GC and Best Buy employees (touted as fixed-wage employees) get 25% commission on these warranties - that's why they push them so hard.

Staples is another company that really pushes the extended warranties - but sir, your extended warranty even covers dead pixels on that new monitor - they drive me crazy.

Hi Franky36: what other stuff? That's the issue.

If it will cover regular maintenance, such as having the amp revalved and rebiased, then supposing you don't do those kinds of task yourself I guess it could actually be good value.

But I bet it doesn't cover that sort of thing.

So then you've got to ask yourself, how often do you drop an amp hard enough to damage it? Different folks will have different answers to that question, and that'll determine whether an insurance policy is worth it for you. And even if it is, an accident of that sort may well be covered already by your household insurance - you need to check. And if it isn't, adding the amp as a named inclusion on your household policy may well work out more economical than the shop's deal.

Or just save your money and take care carrying your amp up and down stairs.

Cheers - C

+1!

In car-salesman parlance, such profit-laden effluvia is known as "blue sky".

It's a huge profit add on. I always steer clear of them.

Bizarro! I knew we'd done the topic recently - but I didn't spot that the top post on this thread was copied word for word! What gives, man?

Now I'm looking at Franky36's other posts and wondering where he copied those ones from...?

Cheers - C
