Glad you like Fender now Bros. A Tele or Strat can sound any way that you want them to, let us know what you decide. 8)

Signature strats are a complete waste in my opinion. I am not spending that much money for something I can achieve with a brand new strat for under $1000.

I agree with you but a friend of mine does not! A buddy of mine who I no longer speak to, had said numerous times that Strats always sound thinner and brighter than a PRS or Gibson. I disagree. I find there is much more that can be altered with pickups.

I love my 2003 Highway and I have a Dimarzio Chopper in the bridge that rocks! Maybe I just find another 2003 Highway and set this one up with my favorite Rio Grande singles and humbucker and call it a day! I just love the early Highway strats. they resonate so much more than any American Standard I have played. I had my tech do a fret dressing, I installed a Callaham bridge, locking tuners and Dimarzio pickups. It is a beast.

Want beefy????? Try on a Clapton and crank that midboost!

Does the Clapton have a humbucker in the bridge? How does it handle metal?

Maybe I am just a Gibson guy and PRS guy at heart.

Before you resign yourself to the past you need to know that
the Clapton Stratocaster's development began in 1985 and was spec'd out by him to offer the best of both a Gibson HB and a Strat. It presently carries noiseless pickups, a TBX [treble/bass cut tone pot] and has always had a 25db midboost preamp in its circuitry. The only way you'll be able to satisfy your curiosity is to audition the guitar.

Thanks ZZDoc for the information! The Clapton has me interested. I have been thinking a lot about all of this. I think since I have so many humbucker guitars, having a strat with a humbucker bridge is too redundant. I think I am ditching my beloved 2003 Highway for something else.

I thought about some Dimarzio Injector pickups but they too sound rather humbuckerish to me. I want my strat to be a nice contrast to my Gibsons and PRS, right now, even though it is comfy to play, sounds too similar to my other guitars with the bridge humbucker. However, it is neat having the bridge HB and the middle and neck as singles, but overall having something completely different would be cool.

So, I am seriously considering a new American Standard strat with Fat 50s. Second, I want to consider the Clapton strat, used. Are they consistent enough to take a chance on ebay? Are they USA made? I am thinking maybe not since the nut/neck is narrow like an import and that is an issue for me. I prefer a fat neck, my favorite is the Gibson 50s, and the PRS Wide/Fat. This neck looks to be thin. :(

How do the electronics work? Will they get great single coil tones for clean when needed and thicker humbucker tones when desired?

The more I think about it, the Clapton is the strat for me! Vintage 6 screw bridge! Blocked Trem! Noiseless pickups! Mid boost! It is my dream strat the more I think about it. What are the years to look at? It bothers me that the neck is narrow compared to an American Standard however. :(

The guitar, in all three version, Artist, Custom Shop, and Masterbuilt, are built in California. The design has been the same since 1988's incept date save for the change from Gold Lace Sensors to Vintage Noiseless. There's been some discussion on another thread regarding staggered tuners but I don't recall how that was finalized. The neck follows Clapton's personal design. There's no other like it in the line.
On stage this guitar has been used through a variety of amplification systems up to the present time. Of particular interest to you might be Clapton's SLO 100 period. His choice is generally the '57 Twin. You might consider auditioning this guitar through a Marshall to see if it's go the bang for the buck you seek.

Another option is the Fender J5 Triple Tele:

http://www.fender.com/guitars/telecaste ... ele-deluxe

It has 3 enforcer humbuckers and a guitar like this would have a heap of stage presence! :D

Or there is the Chris Shiflett (foo fighters) Tele.. Which has the same wide range humbuckers in a 70's deluxe.

Mate there is a lot of options there! :D

Thanks, I will check those out. Right now am really loving my strat. It is the mst resonant and alive strat I have owned since 1987. I may just get this thing playing like I want. I want a strat to be a sharp contrast from my Gibsons and PRS so I am still debating the pickup choices. Not sure if noiseless is better, standard singles like the Fender Fat 50s, or a bridge humbucker, etc. Right now I am leaning toward the Dimarzio Chopper bridge/Dimarzio Cruiser middle/Dimarzio Cruiser neck. I am a fan of Andy Timmons and I thnk his tones are great and very single coilish and he uses two Cruisers. :)

You wont go wrong with a HSS config on a Strat- remember that a lot of the players back in the 90's played hum buckers..

Personally I dont like a SSS on a Strat- just not my thing. The bridge pickup sounds too thin.

Thank you bro, I decided to go with another Highway One strat either with an H-S-S config or an early 2003-2005 HW1 since those had a fatter and wider neck and I could just replace the pickguard to accomodate an H-S-S config.

My 2003 HW1 strat is the first strat since I was 17, that I just can't let go of, it is that good! So resonant and alive! Big and full sounding. I want to stick with what works for me.

Hopefully I can get another HW1 strat this year and another Gibson LP this year.

If the Clapton midboost piques your interest, you could also keep an eye out for a powerhouse strat - 12db midboost (the Clapton one is 25db) but easily modded to give the full 25 by whipping out a couple of resistors. They tend to go for less than the Clapton ones (there's a lot to be said for a name I guess).

Or you could look out for a loaded PG from one - just looked on ebay and there's a dude selling one in Texas right now...

More forum chat about these guitars right here:

I have a US HW1 strat with a seventies Mighty Mite screamer in the bridge, with coil split. I have the strat tones, plus I've got pretty cool tone, close to EVH's brown sound, when I want that. HSS is a good option in my book!

For years I listened to guys tell me that Fenders are no good for hard rock and that I had to go with PRS and Gibson. Well, now I love Fender, so many varieties, styles, configurations, woods, and they are mostly lightweight, easy to play and inexpensive.
Maybe this will start my Fender collection alongside my Gibson connection.

I think my next will be a Fender Blacktop Tele or Jim Root Tele with nickel covered JB/Jazz set and Duncan Triple Shot system.
