Been playing since I was 16 and I am 43 right now. Grew up on classic hard rock and metal. I have been in a number of heavy modern rock original bands. Recently started playing in a 90s band which plays lots of 90s rock, hard rock and grunge.

I have been a Gibson and PRS guy for years, mostly Gibson. I tend to go for thicker and darker tones. My current amps are a Bogner 20th Anniversary Shiva, PWE Event Horizon and modified Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier.

Current guitars are Gibson LP Standard and SG, PRS CE-22, Fender American Strat and Tele.

I am a big guy, 6'3" and 240 lbs and a natural bodybuilder. I have long arms and big hands.

So recently I picked up two Fenders and have really bonded with them. I think I am enjoying the longer scale length since I am a big guy, it helps not having everything so compact. I have been finding myself bonding. I always thought of Fenders as being too bright and thin, but that is far from the truth. My Tele sounds pretty fat with a Duncan Little 59 in the bridge.

I have to admit, I was thinking of buying my second Les Paul, SG or PRS this year, but the price of LPs and PRS are crazy! I can get a nice new Tele or Strat for under $1000.

Now the tough part is tone, since I play a lot of 90s, darker and sludgy tones.

So.....I was thinking of buying a new 2013 strat with an HSS configuration and install my favorite Rio Grande pickups. Maybe another Tele with humbuckers or a Jim Root Tele since it is Mahogany.

What do you guys recommend as far as Fenders for my situation? Maybe a good mahogany Telecaster or strat?
Only down side, I much prefer American made and prefer a hard tail.

On a side note, I tried some G&L guitars and I could not bond as with the Fenders, plus they cost more.

I would love to find a mahogany strat with 12" radius board!

Thanks!
Rich

I have a Telecaster. It has just what I need. I kept a stock bridge prickup and swapped the neck for a 1981 Seymour Duncan Invader wound by Maricela Juarez.

Btw, I play through an 80s KMD with an early 90s Crate head, it has 2 gains that I can blend if I want. I play punk.

Fender has recently released a reissue of the '72 Tele Deluxe with 2 humbuckers. The Fender humbuckers sound pretty different from the Gibson buckers but not in a bad way. The Tele Thinline also had 2 humbuckers but was a semi hollow body.Squier is making a reissue of that model now and it's quite a great little guitar but you can still luck into 70s vintage models for around $2,500,which isn't bad for a good vintage guitar.
There were also some 2 bucker model Super Strats made also during the 80s and 90s I believe but I'm not too familiar with these models,I played one several years ago and it felt like a Strat but sounded more like an SG.

BTW:There is nothing crazy about developing an affinity for Fenders,it just comes with the territory of gaining better taste.

The big apple strat was a two humbuckered strat with a hardtail bridge, you may be able to find one used.

If not you could always go down the partscaster route and build one using Warmoth parts.

I've managed to find several Strat and Strat type Fenders with the double humbucker layout. Some of these guitars are from old Frontline magazines dating back as far as 2004 but they often show up on E bay etc.Anyway here are some of them.

1. Fat Head Showmaster HH 015-4300-2 EMG H-buckers
2.Showmaster Elite 015-6870 2 Duncan H-buckers,hardtail or vibrato equipped
3.The infamous Toronado 2 H-buckers 011-0700
4. Strat HH 013-3300-vintage trem,LT-113-3300 Locking trem both have Tex-Mex buckers.
5.Stratocaster HH Hardtail-011-7130,Stratocaster HH- 011-7100 vintage vibrato-both guitars have a Fender Black Cobra H-bucker in the bridge and a Side Winder in the neck.
6.Dave Murray Strat 011-8802-806 -2 H-buckers with a single coil in the middle position.
DiMarzio PAF 35th Ann. DP 103 neck,DiMarzio Super Distortion DP100 bridge.
7.Jim Root Strat 011-4545-705 2 active EMG H-buckers.
8.Squier Double Fat Strat 032-1800 Two H-buckers

That's about all that I could run across for Strats but there are also several Tele models such as the Jim Root,The Classic Player Deluxe and ThinlineDeluxe,The Special Edition Custom Telecaster FMT HH,The Special Edition Spalted Maple Tele plus there are several Excellent corresponding Squier models as well as Teles that are exclusive to the Squier brand.

You could also check out the humbucker equipped Jags,Jazzmasters and Mustangs.
Anyway that's a few Fenders for you to peruse-happy hunting, please post pix if you find anything.

EDIT: I identified the first guitar as the Flathead when it should have been the Fathead.

Hi Moochy,I fully know what you mean about P-90s,I have two Epi Casinos,a 1965 John Lennon and an '08 natural and when they are cranked through a dirty amp channel they can almost out-buck a humbucker.I'm keeping my antennaes up for a P-90 equipped solid body that won't break the bank or cause marital strife.

Even though I find the strat very comfy, I prefer the fat, beefy tone of a good Les Paul.
The trick is finding something close to that with the right humbucker pickup in a strat. My favorites are Rio Grande pickups.

I MUCH, MUCH prefer AMERICAN made guys.

Also, the big apple strats I find have a trem.

american is fine, just dont fool yourself into thinking no other country is capable of bolting one piece of wood to another, and doing some soldering  i think the japanese fenders are an EASY match to a US std, but theyre a lot cheaper.

What do you want me to tell you??? I have been playing for a long time and have played a lot of Fenders in that time. I have yet to play an import that plays or sounds as nice as an American made strat.

So, I want a beefy strat and my favorite strats are the early Highway One strats. They have the wider neck like the American Standard series which is important to me and they are some of the most resonant and alive strats I have ever played. I wish the new American Standards were as acoustically loud and livly as the early 2000 Highway One series One strats. I have a 2003 Highway One with a Dimarzio Chopper, Cruiser and Fast Track and it blows away the three American Standards I had owned.

I have been playing Strats almost exclusively since 1973 and have played them from just about every source country that they were produced in and currently own 5.Over that time I have played some exceptional import Strats that I doubt that even Eric Johnson could distinguish them from an American made Strat in a blindfold test. When I went on my last Strat shopping trip I tried out 9 or 10 Strats of various countries of origin and I purposely tried as hard as possible to keep from looking at the hang tags or anything else that would give away the model and/or where it was made.I allowed for a budget of up to $3000 and after all was said and done the one I kept going back to because of the monster "L" series like tone was the Jimmie Vaughn. The J.V. ended up being the lowest priced one of the whole lot also but it blew everything else out of the water.

At a recent family reunion we had a huge jam session (there are quite a few professional guitarists in our family)all of the guitarists were long-time Strat players and they were all blown away by how that Jimmie Vaughn sounded through my little Blues Jr.,one of them already had his own J.V. so it was no surprise to him. There may have been a time when import Strats and other Fender models weren't quite up to snuff but that day is long gone and some incredible guitars are coming from Japan,Mexico and other countries that have Fender facilities.

There are a few web sites in Japan that sell MIJ Fenders that apparently Fender won't permit to be sold outside Japan. These companies circumvent these rules by selling mint or very near mint used Fenders.A buddy of mine has ordered a few from them now and each one is of stellar build quality and sound. You can see for yourself the build quality here: http://www.guitarsjapan.com/ Some of the MIJ Strats even cost more than MIA Custom Shop guitars, some are copies made by companies such as Burny,Fresher,Edwards etc. but there are MIJ Fenders in this category too.

Does the Clapton have a humbucker in the bridge? How does it handle metal?

Maybe I am just a Gibson guy and PRS guy at heart.

Well, there is always the Dave Murray signature Stratocaster... no one could accuse that of not being able to handle metal!
