+1 on the Gretsch Jim Dandy. Parlour sized guitar. Very solid. Nice neck...set up a bit high, but that can be corrected. Great for travelling. Very nice for the price.

After years of writing advice against Ovation in these types of posts, I purchased one from CL (Koa top at $250) just for use as a cheep travel companion. After new strings it has changed my opinon and I am now more accepting of Ovations. If it gets damaged, lost or stolen I would be disappointed but could replace it at the same price point easy. the guitar sounds good unplugged but it really shines when playied through my Acoutisonic 150 amp. Hope this is helpful

What is the very cheapest acoustic-electric guitar you can think of that doesn't constantly go out of tune, or have terrible action?

I need a banger to bring on a cruise, no way I'm taking my Martin on a plane and then a boat. :?

I have this one and I'm completely happy with it. Great action, sounds great, looks great, and holds its tune forever. Oh yeah, street price is <$300 (I bought mine for $269) and it comes with a hard case!

Check my review. :D

Ovations are good guitars... contrary to their reputation in some circles.

I own a Honey Sunburst Applause AE128 (by Ovation - their overseas-built Celebrity equivalent).

It is a very good guitar! It has a super-shallow composite body, solid Spruce top and a slim neck very similar to a Strat or Tele making the transition easier. Bound body and neck with nice tuning machines. It stays in tune well.

It does play a little Bright non-amplified because it lacks the depth of a dreadnaught, but plugged in it's great w/ on-board pre-amp and EQ.

It takes some getting used to the curved back, but that's pretty easily achieved, and no problem at all if using a strap.

I think for the price point (< $175), it's a very good guitar.

cheers!

Bump!
I ended up taking my Martin for the cruise mentioned above, it worked out fine, but now I'm doing the same cruise again and definitely not taking the Martin this time. I made a poll looking for opinions ... which Fender acoustic/electric would be most suited for the job (keeping it under $400).

Please see the poll I created here  viewtopic.php?f=17&t=99085

If you can do with out the electronics while you're at sea, I highly recommend the Mitchell MD-100. I just got one very recently as part of a trade and they are IMO, the best sounding and well built, guitar for their price, which is around $135.00 or so. They're Guitar Center's model that are exclusive to them and their affiliates. It has a Spruce laminate top with Mahogany back and sides. It stays in tune quite well and sounds akin to that of a Martin .

Why not another Martin? I picked up a used American made Martin with Fishman electronics last month for $525. Is having an extra Martin for traveling really a bad thing? My second choice would be the Ovation.

It was a long road, but I finally have my new acoustic!

I went with a FENDER T-Bucket™ 300CE. Here's a short review, with pictures!: LINK

Speaking of - did anyone else catch the news that Ovation is re-opening the factory in Connecticut, which Fender closed when they got rid of the acoustic custom shop? Yay for the guitar makers in New Hartford, CT that worked hard to get the factory re-opened!

I do not own one but I do know that Fender made acoustic - electric guitars (called the Stratacoustic and Telecoustic) for $350-$400 range.

Unfortunately my local guitar shop does not have them. Otherwise I would like to test drive one or the other.

In my opinion, they're form over function. The Telecaster and Stratocaster solidbody guitar shapes weren't designed with acoustic resonance in mind.
