What is the very cheapest acoustic-electric guitar you can think of that doesn't constantly go out of tune, or have terrible action?

I need a banger to bring on a cruise, no way I'm taking my Martin on a plane and then a boat. :?

Plus one there, if your buying cheap I think Ibanez is the way to go especially for acoustic/ electric they can vary in quality, so don't be put off if you try just one and it sucks. The other typical cheapie brands to choose from epiphone, fender, jasmine aren't so bad. But they all usually have the same problem.....ACTION as you described. I love my Jasmine (Takamine subsidiary) but the action is such a BI*$#!! its really off-putting and it cripples my hand, your s'posed to be able to shorten the height by sand ing the bottom of the plastic bridge down, but I don't have the confidence for that yet to do it myself. Also as with any cheap guitar you're probably going to have some tuning struggles. But yeah I played a used V70CE I think black, and it was magnificent the payability, sound, look. The binding was nice didn't look cheap or tacky, overall didn't seem like a cheap guitar, just didn't have a good excuse to buy it at the time. However, I didn't get the chance to hear it plugged in. The Fender Sonora's always looked badass to me though, especially the bursts but haven't gotten to try them.

Suggest an Epiphone AJ 200.

I have one, and not knowing much about accoustics when I got it, didn't think it was much more than a GSO (guitar shaped object), but probably OK for learning chords, etc.

I brought it to my go-to Git shop to get new strings and the people there were surprised at how well it played, it's action, etc. It stays in tune a long time too.

cheers!

+1
Affordable and pretty good.
I played one for several years before I went back to acoustics (for the fuller sound unplugged).

Define cheap?

I can't think of a cheap guitar that doesn't go out of tune especially on the salty ocean air.

Get a Gretsch Duo Jet.

My Dean Exotica is a great guitar, I only paid like $300 for it. I believe they make the same guitar minus the fancy top and binding for around the $200 mark. Check them out... :D

Recently I needed a second acoustic to keep in Nashville tuning but didn't want to spend a lot of money. I got the Greg Bennett GD-100S which I feel is a tremendous value for the money. The guitar plays well, stays in tune, has a decent tone, looks cool with the white binding on a rosewood fingerboard and to top things off - pun intented - it has a solid wood top. Not bad for a street price of $175.

HTH

Cheers!

I have a Cort 12 string that, once setup by my local luthier, is always the belle of the ball when I play with a group.

Thing stays in tune very well and has a really nice bright sound. I have never played their 6 strings, but I have to think they would be similar.

As Lightnin' suggested the Epi AJ-200 is an excellent electro-acoustic guitar,it sounds great either played acoustically or amplified plus the action is every bit as good as the Gibson that it emulates.
You also should look into the Strat and Telecoustics, they have Strat and Tele necks respectively so the action is superb.Although they don't have the fullness and projection of a dreadnaught when played acoustically, they are both among the best sounding acoustics to be played amplified-just incredible for guitars in that price range.

BTW,re Cort guitars: A lot of musicians have boycotted Cort for their atrocious human rights violations and they lost pretty well all of their professional musician endorsers because of their actions in their Korean factories.Even the United Nations commitee dealing with worker's rights has come down hard on Cort.A lot of musician groups have called for a worldwide Boycott of Cort made products. There are many websites that carry the full story on the Cort labour dispute. There's a website called Cortaction group or something close to that which gives a first hand account of a lot of the atrocities committed against the workers including sexual and physical assaults by managers and supervisors which have not only been documented but prosecuted in courts of law, consequently Cort has been run out of Korea.

I had no idea, all I can say is wow. I will not throw my Cort out, but will no longer recommend them.

Check out the Epi. EL00. I think for the money it's better than the Gibson Blues King. & now for the first time it comes with a Fisher set up that brings it's voice out into any room.
The realy nice part is that all that quality will only set you back about $300. Go play one & let us know what you think.

Why not check local Pawn shops for used guitars?

If you can manage without electronics, I highly suggest the new Gretsch Jim Dandy. A friend and I went to the guitar shop a couple of weeks ago and tried one out ... he ended up buying it. It really is a steal for only around $150. The thing sounds great for the price, and played quite nicely. You could also install electronics in it, and still could manage it being under $300.
