I honestly think that it would be kind of difficult. Think about it. You've got a guy that you have almost based your guitar playing on, and then you try to make your solo sound... well, like him! It would be strange to hear your solo being used by the guy whom you've idolized, because you based your style so much on him. Or maybe I'm completely wrong!

Well, everyone's different. Me - I've never had just one guy that I wanted to sound exactly like and leave it at that. I pick up things from everyone I hear playing, and try to find if there's anything about their playing that I'd want to learn from. For me it's more of being the best ME, and having some great influenceSS along the way. As in....

- The knowledge of classical and feedback control of Randy Rhoads
- The versatility and wide-ass vibrato and bends of Steve Lukather
- The cool, mellow vibe and tone of Santana
- The speed of Petrucci
- The gritty balls-out playing or SVR

... and so on.

My goal, even when I first started, was never to be just like Randy or Eddie. It was to be better, and to learn from them, and to be constantly growing and changin.

OK, maybe this wasn't as big a deal as I thought it was...

Hmm. 'Have based 'technique' around Bob Bogle, Nokie Edwards and Jerry McGee of The Ventures, smooth, clear melodic lines on electric, almost always clean. And some of the surf, jazz and lounge guitarists as well, tho those tend to be straight to simplified covers.

However, rather than doing a large % of The Ventures as covers, endeavour is to play own preferences with the great pickers' smoothness and articulation.

And because amp and guitar are not often their 'model,' it ends up sounding...not their sound.

'Twould be way, way too intimdating to sling a guitar in the same room as those three.

Interesting topic, thank you for starting it.

I find it interesting to search for the sound(s) of my greatest innfluence; I guess because I find it so unique and elusive; but mainly for his expression or expressivness. It's not just the effect(s) or the actual note or chords played but all that combined.
The most elusive tone EC (to me anyway) ever had was with the Dominos Live and In Concert CDs.
The only effect I konw of for certain is the Wa pedal; the basic set up of amps and speakers are unknown to me; but there's more to that tone than those things; there has to be something in the way he structued his chords; I can "figure out" or find the chords in books but there are measures in those live cuts that just seem beyond my "by ear" capabilities... the song I'm thinking of is "Got To Get Better In A Little While"
None of the big transcribers even go near EC's live work; I sure wish they'ed give it a try.
As far as playing WITH Eric; heck I used to do that every evening! Me and him (on CD) just jamming away!
I read his autobiography; I was pretty shocked at the things he got himself into. I hope he's got himself straightened out now. He's got a wife now that seems to be able to help him keep his focus.
They say it's best not to get to know your heros too well; that's good advice; but then I'm no one to judge; I have done some pretty silly stuff too.
