Hey Guys,

I had a good find and on an impulse I pulled the trigger on a 1991 Fender (Heartfield) Talon V for $400NZD. I had to drive out of my city for 2 hours to get it which was an interesting journey. The seller lived & worked on a dairy farm and I had to drive across 3 paddocks to get to his house when I got to his address. Here are some pics of the drive>>

Here is the guitar- sorry for the bad quality pics, I shall upload some more tomorrow-

The owner didn't seem to play it that much and it looked like it had been in the case for quite sometime. Judging from the serial# it seems this guitar is a 1991 made in Japan by Fujigen. The fit and quality of this guitar is outstanding. The bridge is a Floyd Rose Pro & it has Dimarzio pickups in HSH format- interesting combination for a Fender guitar, however I cannot find out the specs on these at all.

The overall condition- well, lets say it needs a cleanup. A good one.
The fretboard and neck were absolutely filthy with dirt- Ive cleaned this up and tomorrow I'll get the frets cleaned and looking new. The screws are looking a little rusted and the pole pieces on the pickups are too. I was thinking about cleaning the screws with some WD40 and a small brush- however I'd like some advice about the pole pieces- is there a way to get these looking better? (the humbuckers have hex screws)

Also, is there a way to remove some of the plectrum marks from the pickguard- suggestions??

I have the next week off work so I have some spare time on my hands to get this done- keep me out of trouble

use a compound and polish wax for auto's then just buff.

Do take the pick guard off first....

Hi Blertles: You've inspired me to one day visit New Zealand and head down to the countryside. It looks a lot like the prairies where I live, but a whole lot less flat!

Really nice guitar, enjoy!

Hey Guys-

Well as an update for today I am going to polish up the pickguard:

Image

Soon I will venture down to my hardware store and get some plastic polish. I have also been recommended to browse a motorcycle shop as they have plastic polishes for getting scratches off motorcycle visors too- which may work. Also Im going to remove the screws and get the tarnishing (or most of it) removed using a little WD40 and a small brush.

Also, I am going to finish cleaning the fretboard & getting the dirt off it aswell as clean the frets:

As you can see they are very tarnished from sweat and the elements over the years & I am thinking that a damp cloth just wont do it.

There's a lot more on offer Tornado- I was just here 2 days ago bodyboarding and enjoying the 26c heat... perhaps this will awaken the travelbug within?..

After a good cleanup, here are some pics. The fretboard is lovely. Rosewood soo dark you would swear it was ebony:

A job well done, looks almost new. How much time did you put into the clean-up?

Cheers,

I spent a few hours in total- a little time here, a little time there. I was like a kid with a toy. I don't think I did a good job however, or as good as I would have liked. However I tried to rescue some screws from rust & I had to put new pick guard screws in. I polished up the frets and got all the dirt & grot from the rosewood. Also lightly buffed the body. But thats the fun of it isn't it? I shall dismember her again in the near future & source a pickguard from Pickguard Heaven and adjust the neck a little for less relief. I would have done it this time, but the guy I got it off said that he wasn't 100% sure it was setup for 9's or 10's and I wanted to see what the neck would do with a lighter gauge string.

I also want to practice setting up a floating locking trem too- it seems that there is an art to that.

To be honest I actually found it very therapeutic tinkering with the guitar- I havent done this in years. I'm going to practice some soldering skills, its been a while since Ive done anything like that. Besides, my local shop charges $100 to solder a new pickup :?

That is completely absurd and unjustified.
