... I think I win for tonight. Standing by my motorcycle here in the middle of nowhere waiting for help to arrive. Every time I think I may have finally cured its hard-starting woes it disappoints me once again, and so ... here I stand. There's what we Arizona folk call a river (some of you might better know it as a "creek") within earshot and there's a nice bright moon out, so things could certainly be worse. Figured I would hop by the forums for a bit while I wait. Can anyone beat this as far as unlikely place to submit a post? Keep it clean and safe when responding. :-)

Well, I've been known to work on my laptop while on the can (Is that OK to say?), but I'm willing to bet a lot of people do that.

I roll my desktop around with a generator. I post from the store sometimes.

Brad, I think out in the desert in moonlight waiting for a tow-truck or whatever must win the prize. I can't imagine a more remote place to post from, barring anyone taking a trip to the Gobi or Siberia or or Mt. Everest or Antarctica or something, of course.

You earn the "most post" Brad, lol. Here's hoping your bike recovers and you get home soon. :D

Hi Brad: you definitely win - for tonight.

Ah, it was a blessing/curse the day mobile browsing arrived. I once posted (with pix) from an oarsman's seat on a replica Viking ship on a fjiord in Denmark while waiting for other members of the crew to sort themselves out. That was quite an unlikely place to submit a post.

Seem to remember posting (with pix) from the interval in a Who gig too. But that probably counts as quite a likely spot to post from, far as this Forum goes... :)

BTW: I hope you're going to come back and tell us you got home safe, Brad! After a good night's sleep.

Cheers - C

Imagine how it would have gone down 20 years ago! You'd probably still be out there. Sounds like you need to join AAA. They've come to my rescue a couple of times. Aren't cell phones and smart phones handy?

brad what kind of bike is it.

we cured a very hard starting 55 panhead last year by pulling the carbourator and stoning the manifold and i also did some work on the old carb as someone had over tightened it and pulled the mounting threads a bit an it wouldnt sit flat on the manifold. the other part of the problem is the ethanol gas. which was eating the inside of the old rubber fuel line.

i made a new steel fuell line for it . it now starts in 3 kicks every time in any weather..

the carb was sucking air at the base and the fuel line was collapsing also particles from it would clog the filter.

Brad's new theme song?

Every Forum Moderator needs a theme song.

Or as an alternate idea:

I did make it back safe and sound late last night - knowing this particular bike's starting issue I would not have even attempted the ride without ensuring I could be retrieved reasonably easily and chose my route accordingly. Ironically, the bike died within a few hundred yards of the place it stranded me last time. :D

It's a 1986 Honda XL600R and I'm at the point where regardless of the issue I think I need to just sell it and move on - I've had no prior positive memories on this particular bike so don't have a significant emotional tie to it unlike other XL's I've owned in the past. It's had this hard-starting problem the entire time I've owned it and has left me stranded on a number of occasions already.

My own theme song, eh?! Cool! :D

Brad.
You need to find yourself a clean used KTM 690 dual purpose. KTM's dual purpose bikes aren't hi-tech cutting edge like their MX bikes and in fact they are almost a tad pedestrian in the tech department but they are rock solid. Like how your Honda should be but isn't. I had similar issues with my old Honda XR600R. It was a cranky starter but it also had cam-chain issues. It never actually left me stranded but it would sometimes wear me out before it got going. I also had a Yamaha 426 that was a bear to start and it also had the annoying habit of stalling on you for little or no reason. I got rid of that bike in short order. Apparently the Suzuki DRZ models are reasonably trouble free but notoriously low on power. I never tried one but I know people who've ridden them. Since my switch from Japanese bikes to KTM ... well let's put it this way, I ain't never going back. Never. The great thing about riding a KTM is that you don't notice things like you do on other bikes. Like you might try a Honda and be impressed with how well it turns in. The front end gets planted and just tracks. (LOL! Not your 600 of course but other Hondas) You might try a Kaw and like the bottom end grunt. You might try a Husky and be blown away by it's straight line stability. When you ride a KTM you don't notice anything like that because every aspect of the bike works just the way it is supposed to.

Thanks Brad for letting us know and staying safe. I'm with your decision to sell that motorcycle and may I suggest looking for one of these in your price range Image
