Seriously. 'Have an acquaintance who's a pro and he just hit 50 guitars, about 30+ of them being jazz-oriented.

So SERIOUSLY, how many guitars is not quite enough, just right, too many?

Too many is like where storing, maintaining, restringing, claening, repairing, insuring...playing them...would get to be tedious?

I used to have 62! I noticed most of them I either didn't play or did not bond with, so I sold most of them off. I am quite content with 4 electric guitars, 1 A/E guitar, 1 electric bass, and 1 A/E bass. Although I have been considering adding 1 each of electric guitar and electric bass.

I would imagine as many as you can afford, and are willing to store and maintain.

I have three electrics and two acoustical . That's enough for me.

It also depends on how many different types you want. Some guitars offer different tones if you plan on playing it. Or you could think if you want multiple six strings, 12 strings, different accoustics or even a dobro. There are many variables here.

To someone that wants only one tone and loves their current guitar, two is too much.

To someone that loves guitars, likes to collect and play them and has the time, money and patience to deal with a large number of them, 100 may not be enough.

Personal preference kind of thing.

I have about 12. I play on the same two 98% of the time, and I could live with nothing but my 98 strat and my taylor acoustic. So, everyone's different.

....I think you should have as many guitars as you want, especially if you can afford all of them. You live only once, so you should make the most of it.

If you have a guitar that you like a LOT (especially if it's discontinued), do you feel the need to get a spare as close as possible to that original one? I have a few guitars like that. I keep getting the feeling that if I only have one, then the one is going to get broken or stolen-although neither has happened to me.

How many is too many?

More than what I have!

Seriously though, I am satisfied with what I have--and if I never get another--that's okay--but I also wouldn't turn down another. As long as they're being played--go for it.

This is very subjective and perhaps allusional to certain psychoses (G.A.S. - guitar acquisition syndrome).

To some people, one guitar is all that they'll ever need.

To others, they need a guitar for each 'purpose'.

To others, they need a variety of guitars for various qualities.

To others, they just need every guitar that seems worthwhile to own.

To others, guitars are collectibles - the rarer the better.

I'm of the second type - I have a guitar for a purpose. The purpose changes occasionally. At one time what I wanted was to have a guitar in standard tuning and one in drop-D tuning and another in 1/2-step down tuning so that I didn't have to retune one guitar to play over various songs. But then what do you do about other tunings such as DADGAD and such? Do you need a 12-string, a 7-string, two necks, a bass?

Now I basically have everything that I need - a classical guitar for classical, an acoustic-electric guitar for acoustic, and several electric guitars which each serve their purpose in my range of playing styles. Incidentally, the VG strat fills several niches in one guitar - I get a 12-string, a simulated Telecaster, a drop-D (though the EVH Wolfgand has the Drop-D Tuna on the bridge), and so on.

In my case, it isn't so much the intrinsic quality of a particular guitar - though this can come into play - as its filling in a part of a spectrum that I'd like to fill. The Wolfgang is very bassy (almost like a Les Paul) whereas the Ibanez JS1000 is very tinny so that I can play Satriani, Hammett, et al. The Strat fills in the mid range for other styles and players. My purposes are currently filled. :)

Yes, No, Not really, Yes.

But I have the 2 yeses.

Each of my guitars has a significant difference from the others--except for my Les Paul copy-which was my first electric. Any others I bu will be something different such as-electric 12 string, resonator, semi hollow body, that sort of thing.

Not saying I'll get all of those--but if I get another one--probably one of those three.

If it was financially possible, I would probably buy as many as I could. As long as they weren't trophies in glass cases.
