Actually VW owns Porsche 100% as of about six months ago or so. It's a curiosity of sorts IMO since Dr. F. Porsche designed and built the first Beetle prototypes in 1936 and now his creation owns his name-sake company.

Another Myth...

Porsche stole the Beetle design, known initially as the KdF Wagen (KdF = 'Strength through Joy') from Tatra, a Czechoslovakian Automaker, when Hitler annexed Czechoslovakia in 1938.

It was known as the Tatra T97 and was designed by Tatra Chief Designer - Hans Ledwinka. 508 T97s were built before Tatra production ceased upon the German invasion.

Ferdinand Porsche admitted under oath in a 1967 trial where Tatra sued VW for damages that he "looked over Ledwinka's shoulders' while designing the Volkswagen prototype - the Porsche Type 12". Tatra won the lawsuit and was awarded 3,000,000 Deutch Marks from VW.

The Type 12 prototype was given a new body designed by Erwin Komenda of Auto Union and redesignated the Type 82. It is the Type 82 which most closely resembles the 'Beetles' of the post-war.

Porsche did design the Panzer Tank for the Wermacht and was an ardent Nazi and close to Hitler. He spent 27 mos. in a French prison after the war for War Crimes - used Slave Workers in the factories.

VW was allowed to resume production in 1945 under British supervision (it was in the British occupation sector). In 1949 the British relinquished the company which had now been re-formed as a trust, controlled by the West German government, and the government of the State of Lower Saxony.

cheers!

And we put a goodly amount of engineering and financial support into it too when we didn't have them to spare - there were desperate conditions in Germany that winter amidst the post-war destruction and it was believed that constructive ways to get people back on their feet and off the street were urgently needed. Bearing in mind the mistakes made 25 years earlier following WW1, and their consequences...

To this day we're not sure whether to feel proud of helping rebuild VW, or kick ourselves for it!

Cheers - C

Personally, I fail to see the connection between a German-engineered automobile and a Southern California-engineered guitar.

Now if a Fender edition Chevy 409 in Daphne Blue or a Ford Woody in Surf Green is rolled out.... someone scrape me off the floor! Also, I think that "Fender Edition" should necessarily mean the incorporation of a built-in Fender tube amp in the trunk!

When I look at the design, I think that this can only be enjoyed by a single driver, driving alone. That's because the subwoofer and bass behind the rear passengers' seat is just too good.

I experience this with my regular car that, while it does not have this system, is a "limited edition" late model car that has a good system including tons of bass that comes from the trunk.

When I drive around with my kids, I have to turn the bass *way* down. So there is no way for both the driver and the rear passengers to enjoy the music. It either has to be way too much bass for the back seat, at least for young children, or not enough for the front seat.

Now, I guess that's no reason not to make the best sound you can, and indeed it's nice to rock out when the kids are not in the back seat.

Does it actually have a standard guitar cable sized input that one can plug one's guitar into as shown in some of the photos, which would then use the car's amp and speakers as the guitar amp?

So one can drive to a park (or anywhere) and plug in, open the windows and trunk and put on a free show for the park's other patrons using the car as the amp?

That would be kind of cool, I must admit. It would be really cool if it is actually designed to do this without draining the battery.

I'm not a fan of the current 'beetle' and I don't get this at all.

The sunburst dash it kinda cool though - certainly a better addition to the dash than a bloody plastic gerbera...

A few years back, VW tried this with a cheap First Act guitar. Maybe they'll sell more cars with a Fender. :D

If it does come with a guitar... I bet its a Starcaster. I think it should come with a US Standard or better, then you get to roll a cool guitar worth having into 5 year auto financing!

...........not to mention post-war Japan :!: What would General George Marshall say :?: :?:

Many thanks to our MN colleague for that great historical enlightenment. Imagine if the Nazis had found a way to fit a rocket engine into the thing :!:
