I have no sympathy for those who take their own lives. And why should anyone else?

Have a bit of decency and humanity. For anyone to be so down that they want to take their own life is a terrible thing. You really need to have a bit more empathy.

This reminds me of a video I saw where they portrayed what it would be like if the Internet were real life. You'd be the guy yelling "I have no sympathy for those who take their own lives. And why should anyone else?" from the back of the church during her funeral.

I've known 3 people who have commited suicide. I'll never understand it, but I'll never judge it either. :(

I support freedom of speech among other rights. I also support the rights of others to approve or disapprove of the specific words that are chosen to voice one's opinions.

The truth and details of Ms McCready's situation are unknown to me and I suspect many others, but I do know a little about suicide. I lost a good friend to suicide and I have treated (EMS) both persons contemplating it and families who are victims of a death by suicide. I believe that the number of suicides can be reduced but it will never be completely prevented. I have seen first-hand that some people are too determined to be stopped.

I feel that suicide is unfortunate and that many of us can do more to reduce deaths by suicide, however I do not condone the act and I definitely do not think the person should be pitied. Take a moment to consider the message sent by saying you "understand" or "it's no wonder why" or "it is so sad". Even if your intent is only to express sympathy, your words can also be construed to condone or approve of suicide as a means of escape. Do you mean to condone it? Should the person be martyred? Do you wish for others who are contemplating suicide to see your words as encouraging?

You or I may disagree with Arjay's choice of words but there is no denying that he disapproves of suicide.

If you want to make a difference I recommend you visit http://www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org/ or similar sites and learn more.

Suicide results in far more deaths than we wish to acknowledge. Think about it. How many of you knew someone or know of someone who died by suicide? Then, how many of you knew or know of someone who was murdered? The suicide number will be much higher (and vital statistics prove it) but public discussions on how to reduce these deaths are almost non-existent.

The point was not to condone suicide but just to keep it civil... I came home after a fun night out on Halloween, to the news that my next door neighbor who I knew for 20+ years had just shot his daughter while she slept, had tied his ex-girlfriend's partner to a large rock at the North end and after unsuccesfully trying to kidnap her had shot himself fatally.
Another incident was of a casual friend also taking a shotgun and proving a point to his soon to be ex girlfriend ( she was leaving him ). This is all in a small town where the median income is $60,000 on up and property prices do not see below $500,000. Or in other words that is not supposed to happen in my town... The reality is repugnantly different.

It's unfortunate that this thread is going to become another one that Brad has to close, but I do feel pity, empathy and just what should be a normal sense of concern for people at this juncture.
This does not condone the act but just states that I have concern and perhaps if we all took ourselves a little less seriously than we might be able to progress to a higher plane.

With that I have Strat's to cut up and guitars to build...

Bye ... :!: :!: :!:

Totally over the top and silly. How is saying you feel sympathy for a persons plight, that was so desperate that they deemed it necessary to end their own life, condoning suicide?
How is feeling sympathy for a bereaved family condoning suicide?

Unfortunately this is a thing i see on here regularly, this kind of crass indifference to other people's plights with a smug self satisfied shrug of the shoulders and a "so what!" attitude.

It seems my choice of words did not communicate my sentiment. This topic will inevitably bring out strong emotions.

I think discussion of the problem is worthwhile.

I think involvement in prevention makes a difference.

Sorry if I were taken out of line. And maybe some of yall should take some of your own advice.

My Mother passed away either late Saturday night, or early Sunday morning. So I am a little emotional right now. She was 71.

Some speak of empathy for those who take their own lives. I see it as a sign of weakness. I have no feelings for those who don't have the courage to live life. I'm sorry, but I don't care!
