I've seen a few butts that were a lot nicer looking than a Thunderbird bass.
I'd have to get drunk to play one.

Nice score! As implied by the replies so far ,those are "love it or hate it" basses. What they do, they do well... a friend of mine has one and swears by it. They're decent, although obviously not as nice as the Gibson version. Playability wise, it's a different animal than a Fender... if you can bond with the neck you should be okay though. I personally didn't love it, but I didn't hate it either. It's leaps and bounds above any other Epiphone bass I've seen or played though. Definitely cool for $200. If you decide you don't like it, you should have no problem moving it on and getting your money back, if not even making a slight profit. In good condition, I've seen them sell for $250 to $300. Don't let the nay-sayers get you down on the looks either... they're cool axes. More than a few guys have made a career playing one.

I think it's a great buy and they are fine basses. Make a joyful sound with it. They just look better in a dimly lit room.

I have one. The tone control actually does something, has various tone possibilities. I have actually, for a joke, used it on a honky-tonk country gig. I suggest moving the strap button towards the headstock a bit to lessen the neck-dive. I put Fender flats on it.

I wont be using it for gigs. By the time I start doing gigs I will probably have a new bass such as a Jazz Bass or P Bass.

In some cases the Epiphone has a thicker neck, and the body a bit heavier in weight than the Gibson counterpart to it. They play good however.

 They're not a style for everybody, but they do have some style. Like an Explorer or a Flying V... they have a unique look to them. Like I said, you either love 'em or hate 'em... you don't often hear people saying "yeah, they're okay."

The T-bird bass is a monster and can really pump out pretty heavy bottom end. Despite their unwieldly looks they are quite comfortable to play.A guy who played in one of the most popular bands here in the late 70s had an old Gibson T-bird bass ( one of the first ones made)and a Traynor 200W Bassmaster amp with an 8-10 Traynor cabinet and the combination could bring down walls. The Ox also prefered the T-bird bass but he had a Fender P-Bass neck put on it.Even though the current T-bird is an Epi,it inherited all the balls of its Gibson predecessor. You got a fabulous deal on the bass you have,Congrats.

BTW: I always loved the T-bird bass because it resembled the Firebird which always has been tied with the '54 and '65 Strats for being my dream guitar.

One of the reasons I picked it is because Brian Jones had a Firebird! The T-Bird is basically the bass version of the F-Bird.
