These guys are the reason I play guitar. I know I'm not alone. This is a cover of one of their tunes from the Walk, Don't Run album. Comments and critiques are welcome..

The Ventures are so refreshing; nice clean stuff in the early days. It bewildered my on how they play such intricate things like "Apache", "Walk, Don't Run" etc and then follow up with something so simple, like "The McCoy", which I, and under whelming, guitarist can nail note for note. I must admit I liked the Beach Boys and the Sound Bytes versions of "Honky Tonk" better -- That's just me though. :P

Ok...this is just my own personal opinion so PLEASE take it as such.

First off let me say that personally I do -LOVE- "surf music"...The Ventures, The Beach Boys, Ronnie & the Daytonas, Jan and Dean...I really get off on that stuff big time and I know the influence comes thru in my own playing. That said...

While I'm not intimately familiar with those particular tunes, to me it sounds too much like The Ventures. As a (mostly) cover musician, I have NEVER wanted people walking away from a show saying "Gee...they sound just like so & so". I would much rather have people walking way saying "Man! I -LOVE- their version of Wipeout!". As someone on these forums once said, I like to take a tune and put my own stink on it. A -classic- example would be the Jimi Hedrix cover of Bob Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower". Seriously...can you image that tune if Hendrix had of done it just like Dylan? Yikes I say...YIKES! Another would be the Manfred Mann cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Blinded By The Light"...just a truly mind blowing cover and a classic in and off itself. It's one thing to "pay homage" to the original such as Stevie Ray Vaughn did with a couple of Hendrix tunes, but even there, the tunes still sound like Stevie and NOT Jimi.

At the risk of being totally blunt, while those tunes posted are well played and well recorded, they just really lack any sense of originality...if I really wanted to listen to The Ventures, I'd just listen to The Ventures. Instead of trying to basically duplicate something that's already been done, try putting your own spin on it...take the music further than where you found it. Not being rude...just honest.

Again just my own personal opinions.
Jim

Very surprised to hear that's a Frontman 25R. Now I believe the hype!

Smoking Hot! Sounds like a take right off of a 5-O sound track. Nice stuff.
