Looking at all the responses, there's some great solos listed. Whats nice about this is that it gives us an idea of what each of us is into. Goes to show, cant read a book by its cover.....
Another one of my favorites is not really a solo as much as an instrumental, although it can be considered a looooong asssss solo....

Rush, YYZ

After careful consideration of all guitarists, all genres, etc...

I found THIS to be the ultimate guitar solo/solos (2nd solo is so awesome, it's like having a conversation with God!)

1st solo: 2:29 - 3:00

2nd solo/outro: 4:58 - 9:22

well... this "blues guy" is on board with that one! (Ritchie might be a little annoyed that you spelled his name wrong)... but...

one of my all-time favorites is Robert Fripp's solo on The Night Watch from the Starless and Bible Black album. 2:48 the solo starts... but like most songs, you need to experience the whole thing to fully appreciate the solo.

Big +1 on Gilmour's Comfortably Numb - Pulse Live version!

Noob question: Gilmour's iconic strat is a 21 fret... is the 22 frets on US made strats a relatively new thing? Or were his iconic strats not American?

This is a tuff one, but gotta go with Eric Claptons solo (both) on Crossroads...and a close second...Duane Allman and Eric Clapton going back and forth on Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad, off of the Layla Album.

An old favourite, particularly the 2nd solo... EC HYELAW
Watching this gig on the TV in 1990 is what made me buy a guitar and give it a go!

My very favorite of all time: David Gilmour's solo in Time. It takes me places.

No his original Black strat had 21 frets. Although he has had several variations, necks, pu's , bridges over the years!

Also am adding his work on "Dogs" as one of my favorite solos! It is also my favorite Pink Floyd song.

Just a good example of why I can't stand to listen to this guy. Secondly, what the hell is he wearing, and why?

My own favourites include

Money
Roy Buchanan versions of Down by the River, Hey Joe, and his own 5 String blues.
Peter Green - Got a Mind to give up livin, and Worried Dream
SRV live version of Leave My Little Girl Alone.

Most of his stuff escapes me, too!
Just too crazy stuff for a simple listen. I'd say he's like Hendrix was in his early days.
Hendrix was a crazy innovative guitarist with new styles and if most of the people during the hippy days hadn't been completely stoned, he probably wouldn't have become such an overhyped guitar God (but still influencial to other musicians, no doubt). He just happened to become a symbol, driven by the incredible changes in people's minds those days.

Vai invents new styles to play guitar and many people, including me, are just overloaded by what he's doing. There is a reason, why 95% of Steves fans are guitarists themselves.
It's not his crazy compositions, which can actually even get on your nerves at times but it is his attitude, his passion, his expression and his command over every piece of his guitar in ways, nobody else has done before, which makes him very, very special.
I can hardly listen to Vai albums at home, I get bored after the first 3 songs but I've seen him live and man, he incorporates his guitar with his entire body and heart.

This particular video is the absolute masterclass of 100% control over the instrument.
Yes, it's very experimental and extraordinary but it transports such an incredible amount of passion and feeling.

It's a matter of taste, whether you like the sound and/or composition or not. Nobody can argue about that.

And yes, I agree that one single note can transport such an amount of passion and feeling as well. You needn't to be so innovative and experimental as Vai is to touch a guitarist's heart.

As I said, there's so many other solos to name. I simply had to decide for one.

Glasgow Kiss or Damage Control by John Petrucci could be named as well.

I always liked the solo on "Cover of the Rolling Stone". I never could duplicate it.
