I was thinking this might be a fun thread. There are many great solos by just as many great artists but is like to make this about your personal favorites. I'll start it off with one of my all time favorite by The Knack, My Sharona.

STEVE VAI: "Whispering a Prayer"

For me, this is the most awesome guitar piece EVER!
It touches me very much and the song's climax beginning at 5:24 just drives tears to my eyes!
Of course there's many, many more but this one is just incredible. Please watch!
(The sound on the DVD is much better, of course but well .... it's YouTube! :? )

Shine On You Crazy Diamond - Pink Floyd
My Old School - Steely Dan
All Along the Watchtower - Jimi

too many to list, but I'm up for anything Gilmour really. Marooned is an excellent solo/instrumental, as well as Castelorizon.

So many to choose from......

Off the top of my head, Clapton's solo in "Let it Rain Down" by Phil Collins, and Billy Gibbons in ZZ Top's "Rough Boy".

Cheezy I know... but I always loved the end solo on Journey's "Who's Cryin' Now?"

I was just listening to that 5 minutes ago and thinking how nicely phrased the guitar solo work is.

Here's a short list of mine, so many to name!

The Eagles - One Of These Nights
Steve Vai - Call It Sleep
Pink Floyd - Sheep
Jimi Hendrix - 3rd Stone From The Sun
Led Zeppelin - The Song Remains The Same
Yes - Yours Is No Disgrace
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Riviera Paradise
Emerson Lake and Palmer - Karn Evil 9
Steely Dan - Kid Charlemagne
Steely Dan - Peg
Steely Dan - Reelin' In The Years

Have to go along with "Kid Charlemagne"
Can't leave out "Stairway to Heaven"
Eric Clapton's two-part solo in "Let It Rain" off his first solo album...pure strat tone!
B.B. King's "Why I Sing the Blues"
The whole of Santana's original "Samba Pa Ti"
David Gilmour's work on Pink Floyd's "Money"

...Just off the top of my head, too.

Best solo ever (IMO) in the history of solos ...
Gilmour's work on Comfortably Numb, both the solo and the outro.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Have to agree with that. After 30+ years, I still get chills when I listen to it and I could never grow tired of it.

Other favorites worth mentioning:

La Villa Strangiato by Rush and the acoustic guitar solo on Take A Pebble by ELP.

Two others which are double guitar solos and a bit main stream but are still awesome:

Roll With the Changes by REO Speedwagon and Dreams I'll Never See by Molly Hatchet.

Skip to 3:10 for the solo. This is my favorite Dream Theater solo and one of my favorites of all time.

Mick Taylor's beautiful slide solo in "Love in Vain" on the Rolling Stones' live album "Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out!"...one of the best slide solos ever in the history of forever.

Billy Gibbons' solo from "Sure Got Cold After The Rain Fell"...

David Grissom's solo in the song "Letter to LA" from Joe Ely's live disc "Live At Liberty Lunch"...
