Any of you jazzy players have a nice voicing for a 6th root 9 chord (G9 for example)? Any help would be much appreciated.

Are you looking for a inverted 9 chord with a 6th as the bass note?

6th root meaning the lowest note is on the 6th (low E) string. I was wondering if '5th root' and '6th root' were something my teacher made up.

Not entirely sure what you're asking since you didn't define your chord very well. Kind of ambiguous description there. If you mean G6/9 there's only one way that I know of that doesn't require breaking some of the bones in your fingers to accomplish:

1 - Open
2 - Open
3 - 2 (2)
4 - Open
5 - 2 (1)
6 - 3 (3)

Numbers in brackets are the fingers I use to fret the note.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Here is a movable form,
String. Fret
1. X (3 if you have the dexterity, mute if not)
2. 3
3. 2
4. 3
5. 2
6. 3 (low E string)
Use your 2nd finger on the low root and bar with the index finger.
This is a G9, G1 B3 D5 F(b7) A9

Yea, I think the 6th root, 5th root thing is probably unique to your teacher. That's just his method of teaching it - nothing wrong with that. There are actually differences in the way jazz players or classical players communicate chord theory. Especially when it comes to Dim7 chords. Drives me nuts.

If you mean G 6/9 then a classic example of the 6/9 sound in actual context is the final chord of SRV's "Love Struck Baby".

To play that chord you barre the top 2 strings (E and B) with the second finger and barre the G and D strings with the first finger one fret lower. He plays this at the 12th fret (notes E, B, F#, C#) and the Bass player handles the root (A). So for G 6/9 you would move that down 2 frets (notes D, A, E, B)

i would say you are looking for an easy way to play a G9 dominant chord with a 6th string root...ie E9 dom.....bad news...no easy way.....most of the 6th string root dom 9 chords can be a pain in the azz....the easiest G9 dom is 10th fret 5th string root.....good luck

I think this nailed it, thanks so much Deluxe Matt, same as this pic which for some reason I couldn't find when I was searching before:

Yeah agreed, I don't know my theory very well, and I'm not much of a jazz player. Basically the question was, how can I play this chord:

...but with the lowest note played on the 3rd fret of the 6th (low E) string instead of the 10th fret of the 5th (A) string. The rest of the chord progression I'm working on I managed to find low on the neck, so I didn't want to move my hand all the way up to the 10th fret for just that one chord.

Thanks to all you jazzy people, I'll give this one a try.

A great way to quickly show you many variants of any specified chord. I used to use it before becoming more proficient with choosing scale degrees.

Do you mean you want the root note to be the 6th degree of the scale, or that you want it to be on the 6th fret? if it its the former, I think I would write that as an Em/Gadd9, which I would play as.

E-0
A-2
D-0
G-2
B-3
E-3.

Or E dominant7 sus4 addb10, depending on your philosophical bend.
