I forgot how good this band could be. I think this song is Great White perfected, the sax is good and the guitar solo is O.M.F.G.!!!!. I think he makes this guitar absoulutely cry a river. They arent my favorite but, damn , they got this one right. http://youtu.be/c6IUeuBv_YA

Good band. I saw them open for Whitesnake in early December '87 at the Allstate Arena (it was the Rosemont Horizon then).

Yes the band screwed up in using pyro indoors .... But The fire inspector was in the bag, the club owners were D----- Bags and they themselves should be in jail for life. They knowingly installed highly flammable material on the walls and compounded that reckless decision with highly flammable paint over the friggin egg cartons....

I live not 30-40 minutes from Warwick and was in fact going to go see Great White that night, but being on B.I. at the time there was no way to get there.
I lament that such stupidity resulted in so many losing their lives and friends of some of my friends being indelibly scarred for life....

If you are going to point fingers on this tragic event, then include all responsible, not just the band. As a matter of fact the idiots who owned the club authorized pyro with prior acts , while knowing full well that (1) The ceiling was too low for safe handling, (2) When a full house is in existence, it is next to impossible to exit quickly en masse and (3) They had the exits locked from the back of the stage. ( Yes I had been at that venue before for music )

So this thread is probably going to erupt into a S--T Storm thus I urge Brad to lock it up before it gets out of hand. This is not a good subject to bring up and I can only hope that the judicial part of this is not over concerning the club owners ...

That being said I'm done here ...

were in agreement on all you posted. ill also include the fire marshall for that area as well. he should have made the owners pull all that stuff down and shut the club until it was done.. but again all you said is true and the owners should still be rotting in jail. unfortunately the only one who got time was one of the owners and the band manager as i recall. and the owners still owe a mil for something. the place was way toosmall for the crowd they had.. but the band just walked away.. my personal opinion is this wether they were authorised to use pyro or not.. they should have done a better job of keeping a hand on it. also you should be insured for damages..

i guess we are not quite done ....
I wouldn't say the band walked away, the lead singer is still facing lawsuits, the bass player died from the fire, as musicians the remaining members are all Persona Non Grata.
Great White was already at the time a band whose time had come and gone hence why they were playing at such a small venue.

Jail time for the club owner(s) was a joke and they used ( and still are ) all their Rhode Island resources to basically get a slap on the wrist. The fire marshall knew that the place failed applicable standards yet gave the green light knowing full well what was happening as far as bands in that venue and what the acts displayed ... There is no innocence here from the people that are obligated to ensure that a public venue is safe and is being used under the rules of safety ...... There is plenty of public records on testimony from bands that played previous to the station Fire as to what they were not only allowed to do but were told to .... It was all about maxing out revenues by filling the house and pyro technic display was a cheap way of attracting more clients ( unsuspecting as they were that they were for all intents and purposes led to the Ovens .... )
I refuse to be politically correct on this as there is no need to risk patrons health in order to maximize revenues. If your musical roster is good enough then they will attend ... No need for the Cirque Du Soleil imitations ...

( On a separate note, a similar incident just happened in Brazil with multiple loss of life... )

that was a sad moment in R&R history. If I'm ever at a show in a small place like that and I see Pyro, I'll be out the door in a heartbeat and try to get my money back.

Hence why I'm never comfortable in small venues where I cannot see the exits....

btw i worked in a small club in the city of providence .

you might have heard of it. last call saloon. its been closed for some time now.. we never allowed any pyro.. but the club was always full on weekends..

much like you said the acts attract the crowd.. we did alot of local acts and national acts as well.

never a problem in the time i worked there.

Wow, what happened to this post. I just wanted to share the SONG and look what happened. I know about the fire , it was a horrible loss, and i feel for everyone involved, but this post was just about the song and nothing else. I dont think it was the bands fault, it was the pyro company they hired ( according to a documentary on t.v.).

I haven't seen that documentary, but having lived in RI and now CT and often working in Providence, it is the 1st I have heard of blaming the Pyro company...

Sorry that you thought this would be a great vid, but No... not to a lot of people who would prefer that the name Great White stays dormant ...

The entire Sail Away disc is a keeper. Great White were always a band that were considered by many to be kind of silly - and in some ways they might have been - but that strong backbone of blues combined with their songwriting is just great. And after the Rhode Island incident, well...enough said in previous posts. But one thing I will say - Mark Kendall is an absolute monster of a guitar player. His playing alone makes the band worth listening to.

My forgetfulness rears it's featureless face. An apology from me, that is a terrible tragedy that should not have occured. Seriously helpless feeling makes you want to forget.

I always considered them to be kind of a Led Zeppelin clone (especially the vocals) but they were one of the good ones.
