Hi people

I've had my blackstar HT5R combo for about 18 months now, and my band is starting to get more serious; we have a couple of events coming up (nervous  ). I know it has one ECC83, and one 12BH7. I'm thinking about getting some spare/backup valves for it, however...I don't really know where to start-do I have to get the same make/model valves it came with? In which case, I can't actually find what they are, exactly. Or can I get any ECC83 and any 12BH7-would specific ones suit my amp better? And how much do decent ones that are the same quality as I currently have cost-for such an integral part of the amp, a lot of searching has turned up a lot of pretty cheap options. And also biasing-do I need to get this done for any new valves? I'm assuming it's something I have to take to a local dealer. This seems pretty complicated, any advice would be much appreciated :D

Thanks!

EDIT-I don't necessarily mean to use the amp alone for gigs, but I may use the speaker out, I've heard an HT1R sound truly mighty with this engaged :D And I would preferably like good reliability for practising-we don't get much time to rehearse, so don't want to lose any more time through a broken amp.

those are both pre amp tubes you shouldnt have to bias the amp for them.

i bought a whole set here for my 1980 twin reverb

if you want to get the exact brand in there youll probably have to go to the amp manufacturer.. but its not necessary.

You are partially correct.

The ECC83 (aka 12AX7) is the typical tube seen in thousands of guitar amp preamps over the years. Cathode biased, they do not require rebiasing when they are changed. The 12BH7 is a high current driver tube. These are the only two tubes in the HT5R.

Blackstar does not release their schematics but I would assume that the ECC83 performs its usual role as a preamp and the 12BH7 is used as the power amp tube (there are a few low watt amps that use a 12AT7 as the power amp tube). It is also most likely cathode biased and would not require rebiasing when changing.

Thanks for the help! I can see now that there are a lot of potential replacements so this is good news :D

One other thing-I have found an extension cab designed specifically for the HT-5 series, http://www.blackstaramps.com/products/ht-112/

It says it is designed specifically for my amp-is there any truth in this, in that will I get a benefit from using this over a similarly priced 1x12 cab (that matches my amp)?

Also, since my amp is 5W, will I only ever get 5W of power and therefore my volume is limited to what I get through my HT5R anyway?

Thanks very much!!! :D

Your amp will only produce 5 watts if the speaker impedance matches the load that the amp is designed for (4 ohms, 8 ohms, 16 ohms). However, that has nothing to do with how loud the amp will sound. That depends on the speaker sensitivity/efficiency. A more efficient speaker will sound louder than a less efficient one given the same power input (assuming both speakers are the same impedance). In other words, if the speaker in the amp has an efficiency of 95 dB SPL/watt and the external speaker has a sensitivity of 100 dB SPL/watt, the external speaker by itself will sound louder than the speaker in the amp by itself for the same 5 watt input.

OK, well it appears that both the HT112 can and HT5R combo (which the HT112 is designed for) use the same Blackstar Blackbird 50 12" speaker...Sorry for being a novice but would this not stay at the same volume, given that the same speaker will have the same efficiency? :D
