yep he makes a great point about including more relevant info that doesn't already fall into your little box, it's currently a little 'big brother-ish, except we always thought it would be the government doing it. Turns out to be this guy:

I have not been and will continue to not be a part of Fecebook. The creep in the photo above was part of my decision even before the "interesting" data mining aspects of it seeped out. Like an overfilled cesspool.

(Political Discussions), are of a Specific Kind and gender. They include only one, & a very opinionated topic. On the other hand (Other Kinds Of Arguments) could include a multitude of "OTHER TOPICS". "SEX, DRUGS & ROCK & ROLL". Only to name a few. Thease are the subject's that in my openion, are the most interesting & sensual of them all. They keep us Singing, Picking & writing new songs & music, to keep our collective fluids flowing. (Teach) the little ones to play.

I don't FB either, it doesn't interest me, nor am I needy enough to think everyone is interested in the drab everydayness of my life. My wife and her friends treat the place like a photo swap coffee shop.

It's also ironic, with the value people put on privacy, particularly when dealing with govts - the resistance to all sorts of ID cards, no matter what political euphemism is attached to them, and all the social panic created by civil liberties organisations about what govts should have access to - yet 10s of millions are more than happy to tell a private company anything and everything about themselves, willingly and for free.

I trust some sites and distrust others. Facebook is just for entertainment, I don't use it to research issues.

It's not about using FB for research - it's about how they use the information from it, when you do internet searchs.

Facebook only knows what you tell them or what they find out from other sources. If you post all your personal information to your profile and upload lots of pix of yourself doing the things you like to do then they'll know lots about you. If you keep your personal info to yourself and only upload pics that don't tell anything about you and refrain from "liking" everything under the sun that you like then all they'll know about you is your user name and your email address. And of course the things you say. Lots of people don't use their real names. Of course most people reveal things about themselves elsewhere on the internet and leave their name and email there so there will be a trail to follow and information to piece together anyway but that doesn't mean they get it all from FaceBook. FaceBook is definitely one of the bad ones but only for people who don't know any better or don't care. My FB profile is bare bones minimum and there are no pics of me that show my face or my actions clearly. My friends know not to "tag" me in pictures. FB knows some of my personal opinions but not much else unless they learned it from other sources like Google.

Google is a really bad one. What they know about you without you ever telling them is scary and you don't have to have a Google account or be logged in for them to be able to find stuff out about you.

At the end of the video the guy didn't ask for them to stop filtering. He asked them to make the filtering better so as to include a better well rounded sample and to give us some measure of control over it.

Frankly, I'd prefer they just didn't do it. Or at least offered a "non-filtered" button option.

Though I entirely understand the commercial reasons that isn't going to happen.

So: are we simply saying that we don't care to have Google and others filtering what we see in an attempt to give us what they think we want?... Or: do we think that if everyone was viewing the same information then arguments would be much more consensual, because people would only be able to draw one conclusion from a given set of data?

That was my implication, yes. To both ... but the second one would only work if the information provided was actually factual. As Drubbing quite rightly pointed out, search engines (even without filters) show you what is popular but not necessarily what is correct.

Yet all experience shows people come to completely different conclusions even if starting from the same "correct" information. Showing everyone the same data isn't going to lead everyone to the same conclusions. Arguments will rage on, as ever.

Difference of opinion does not only arise from viewing different sources.

Cheers - C

Well... I have an idea we need to keep a sense of proportion about this thing.

Every instinct in me strains in the same direction as you and others on this thread: I find all the intelligence gathering done by internet corporations (as well as many others, such as supermarkets, credit cards companies and so forth) deeply creepy and worrisome.

And yet. The reason Google, Facebook, Apple and others do it is simply so that they can point advertising and product sales at us more effectively and thereby charge the advertisers and others more. It's about revenue stream.

There's plenty else to loathe Google and Apple for, but they're not really the Stasi.

Then again. Google are quite astonishingly secretive about certain areas of their operation, such as their giant server and what goes on in that huge, grey, blank building. Even if Google aren't conducting Smersh-like dark activities, who else taps into their data, and what ends might they put them to?

Ultimately, it's always a good idea to be careful what we tell these people about ourselves.

Just for instance, everytime I log on to Youtube they ask me to tell them my mobile phone number. Ha! I think not...!

Cheers - C

Perhaps. People do love to think of themselves as individuals (even though the mob instinct is about a dozen times stronger) but I suspect that it must be at least slightly easier for people to get along if they all know the facts.
