I love just about every aspect of music and just about any genre as long as there is a large degree of feeling and emotion put into it and of course a large degree of virtuosity. Music has played a huge role in my life for as long as I can remember.I was always surrounded by music as my mother was a church organist and my father was a choir director and both my maternal relatives and paternal relatives were almost all musicians. I learned my first song on piano when I was 3 or 4 and picked up guitar at 9 so for over 50 years I've been able to play an instrument.I doubt very much that I'd be able to keep my sanity if I was ever to be deprived of music as it's such a huge and integral part of my life and just about every waking hour I have music of some kind of another playing either at home or when driving.I have a huge collection of classical CDs and albums with well over 200 of Mozart alone.Music of other cultures also is of great interest, especially India and I have a large collection of Ravi Shankar's music also.During all wakng hours I find it necessary to be either listening to or playing music.

Chicks dig musicians. :D

Haha in all seriousness, since I'm new to all this music playing thing, I've been discovering a whole lot about about myself. It has been a great journey so far and can't wait what's in store for the future. I'm only 37 so there is still time to get good enough to be very good at it. :)

I like your attitude! I'm also new to this music thing, started a few months ago at age 28 and before I started I often found myself thinking I was already too old to ever get good at playing the guitar. Then after I started my mindset changed. It may take me a little bit longer to learn, but it's fun and exciting and it makes me happy. I want to learn more, become better and taking it one small step at a time, I will be a good/very good guitar player someday!

As for what I love about music? I always loved it, never been able to put my finger on the what or why. I guess it's a way to experience (and now that I'm learning also express) emotions for me. It's just something that reaches in and triggers something in me... Honestly, I lack the vocabulary to explain it in words.

If a musician possesses artistic genius, he can write a song about his pet turtle and have much of the world think it's a song about feminism just because it includes the words, "You're in a laundry room." (Pet turtles can reside in laundry rooms too, not just women doing laundry!!!) In that same song, one can rock a solo that causes most people to shiver, close their eyes, and just groove. Music can do all of that, in the right hands.

I knew a guy who went to a music school knowing absolutely nothing and inside of 2 years he became a capable jazz player. I never would have thought that was even possible.

There is a difference between playing an instrument, and playing music. Anybody can learn picking a guitar, but to actually play music others want to hear, is very, very hard and you won't learn that in some sort of school.

Listening and playing music are two different things. But the more you understand music, the more you appreciate it and it drives you towards musical nirvana.

Or just jamb to some old school Black Sabbath and don't worry about it.

The thing I like most about music, it's always in my head.

I'm a college student studying music at a community college, will finish this spring. But being surrounded by unmotivated musicians at a community college has started to throw off some of my attitudes towards music. I've never had this problem before. I just don't get as excited as I used to when I would learn a new scale or hear a great lick that I HAD to learn. It has just started to feel like work.

What is it about music or guitar that brings you back to it time and time again? What about music inspires you to persevere? On a side note, do you pay attention to lyrics and do you think lyrics are important?

MrStratguy22, congratulations for going to college to study music. Studying music will help you on your musical journey. Try not to let the attitudes of unmotivated musicians influence your thought it can be unmotivating
Lyrics are at least as important as what you've written on this thread. An instrument that sings words instead of just notes.
Lately I realize more tha ever how much I love music. Start with a beat, like a heartbeat. Then add a wonderful sound, guitar, voice. Take it from there, use your imagination. and those are a few of my favorite things.... 8)
