Maybe. He's played many cheapo basses and guitars over the years. I'm only wondering if the Chinese pickups and electronics would hold up with so many watts behind it.

Ever played a real 60's Hofner bass? You'd probably consider an Asian manufactured copy to be an upgrade.

Considering most guitars made today are better made than they were in the 50s and 60s, I'd say yes, and he did play Yamaha basses for a while in the 80s, BUT when he started playing Hofners in the 60s, initially US guitars weren't available in the UK and when they did arrive they were prohibitively expensive, so he played Hofners because it was the best he could afford and available left handed.
He now plays the best available of what suits him best, so no, I wouldn't think he'd even give them a thought.

No, he's still with Hofner. I've even seen him with a Kay bass of some model.

I saw in an interview where Paul said "he was anybody's" for a free bass.

Would it be considered a copy if it was the Hofner brand? That, my sir, is the question.

To be honest I think Paul's original bass was either worse than or the same quality of the modern Made in China/Made in Indonesia violin basses that Hofner puts out nowadays.

If I am not mistaking, his Fender Jazz and Rickenbacher were both given to him by the respective companies. His second Hofner was also given to him by the company after the Beatles were a household name.

The one he plays most is the one used in the rooftop concert in "Let It Be," which turned out to be the last public performance by all four of them together. It still has the setlist from that last Beatles performance taped to the top side. He has other basses and often used a Fender Jazz in recording along with Fender Bassman amps in the Fab Four's later years. He is so closely associated with the Hofner "Beatle Bass" that he uses one at about every appearance.

There were Fender's available in the UK when he decided to switch to bass but they were in short supply, very pricey when compared to European made instruments and there was a long wait for a lefty. He needed one fast and the Hofner was the best lefty he could find quickly that was in his budget.

Fender was distributed by Selmer in the UK at the time. Selmer did supply lots of the latest Fender gear to the Beatles, including the PA system and some instrument amplifiers used for the unannounced Apple building rooftop concert in the film. Some of it was delivered only shortly before the concert was filmed.

Didn't realize they weren't made in Germany any longer. Sad the way some business people don't value the country of origin aspect and will just outsource manufacturing to the cheapest country of the moment.

I think he'd play a First Act bass if he got enough.

In the 60's, there were two violin basses considered to be better than the Hofner. The Italian EKO Bass, and the Gibson EB1.

They are still made there but the lower priced models like the Ignition (Indonesia) and the Contemporary (China) are made in Asia.

Anyway, I might get the Ignition for now then buy a German made one when I get a job XD
