ah! hmmm well I don't play the bass, but I know you see a decent amount of Fender basses when watching music video's and stuff, so i'd assume they're pretty awesome!

I have a USA P Bass which I use in one of the bands I'm in. I mainly play guitar but the bass is a refreshing change now and again. Fanatic is correct, you'll find a lot more answers in the Bass forums. 8)

Considering that Fender INVENTED the electric bass, I think it is a pretty safe bet that both the Precision and the Jazz are great instruments!

I am a bass player. I have 2 Fender P-basses. Go down to your local music store and spend some time comparing various basses, from the $200 ones up to the most expensive one. Play around with them all and find the one that feels right for you.

I have 3 usa j-basses, and a highway 1 p-bass. I like them very much. The J bass is a great instrument for my playing style and the tone I desire. You will have to find out if it is right for you.

both types that fender offers are great. the pickups offer different tones though, so you should compare them and see which you prefer. also, the neck of a jazz bass is thinner and easier to move down for smaller hands or if you just play faster and need a smaller neck. a p bass neck is heavier compared to a jazz bass. if you play a jazz bass for a while and switch over to a p bass right after it, be prepared. the p bass neck almost feels like a five string compared to the jazz neck.
