The Brits re-introduced us to our own roots music...that's what.

I was 11 when they came on the Sullivan show. I got my guitar and began lessons the next Xmas. One had to be alive then to know what popular music was and how the radio was often a joke. ''Purple People Eater'' and ''Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini'' are some examples of the novelty crap used to fill in the time between the real music of the era. The Beatles and the British Invasion were the beginning of an amazing period of music and culture on the planet.

You had to be there.

I was 5 years old when the Sullivan broadcast occurred but I vaguely recalled the exitement my 6-years-older brother had. Much of the music he introduced me to followed what he picked up from the British Invasion.

I often wondered if the US acceptance and excitement paralleled the experiences the Brits had when the US roots music first hit their island? I've read anecdotes from several British musicians (Clapton, Richards, Lennon) about scouring record stores for blues music and the exitement they felt when listening to it.

For all of us, it was a major culture change - from the novelty music that modwiz mentioned to the rock and roll that emerged at the end of the decade.

Doc,you sure were at a the epicenter of the 60s East Coast scene,I really envy you there and I'm sure that many others who were around in these halcyon days do too. When The Beatles appeared the world was in need of a pick-me-up because we were just getting over the closest that the world came to a nuclear incident if not a war with The Bay of Pigs plus the world was still reeling from the assassination of JFK. Being the vanguards of the British Invasion the Beatles initiated what was to become a musical Renaissance. The British Invasion heralded an about-face of the music industry. For years the world of rock and roll was in the doldrums and saturated with the boy-toy types like Fabian,Paul Anka,Neil Sedaka,Frankie Avalon and other young crooners who sang sad songs about breaking hearts etc.,stuff of this ilk and novelty songs were the rule of the day. Thanks to The Beatles they kick-started a return of R&R to its roots reintroducing us to the music of Chuck Berry,Buddy Holly,Carl Perkins and other rock idols from the 50s who had dropped off the radar with the introduction of the aforementioned teen dreamboys. All of a sudden real rhythm and blues orientated rock was in vogue again and largely due to The Beatles' penchant for experimentation and utilizing other musical influences from other cultures and genres, rock music, over time metamorphosed into many other subcategories.

Sadly, rock music has been supplanted by the vacuous, insipid, tiresome audio pablum that is assailing our ears these days from most FM stations. I find pretty well all FM stations these days are pandering to the 12-16 year old teen demographic. When you see people with little going for them but puppy dog eyes etc. becoming major stars, you can rest assured that the music business is becoming more of a farce than ever. Years ago, even the teen magazines dealt with bands and solo acts such as The Doors,Steppenwolf,Bob Dylan,The DC-5 etc. but these days you see such banal acts as Justa Beaver and One Way getting star billing as if they are the only people currently
making music.Even Rolling Stone which used to pride it self for being a source of first rate journalism with such contributors as Hunter S. Thompson and its indepth interviews with serious musicians, has decided to become another teeny bopper rag.

WANTED: A band or artist that would give the music industry a boot in the arse like The Beatles did.

That isn't going to happen though,it's up to the younger serious musicians of today to make sure that rock once again vanquishes the bland drivel that abounds on the airwaves and get real rock music back there again.A change of A&R people of the record companies would be a good start because they are largely to blame for getting the mediocre crowd that has infiltrated the music industry signed.

Just last year Pete Townshend was making the rounds promoting his book. He made a comment about how the music industry, which was never a wholesome bunch, has become much worse. They spend no money developing artists and allowing art to be made. What was once but an annoying blood sucking parasite has become a ravenous beast hoping to profit off the equivalent of its own butt nuggets. We are now at the end of one cycle and the beginning of a new one. The internet artist is not as glamorous or rich, but there is real art being made. Much too dangerous for corporations seeking to turn listeners into copraphages.

It is a shame, real talent was a win/win/win situation. Execs and musicians made money and listeners got music worth paying for. Almost all radio stations being owned by clear channel is another big problem. Every part of the music industry is owned and run by people with no talent besides dreaming of more money.

I always remember when one of the Beatles asked a member of Led Zeppelin how long their set was and upon being told around the 2 1/2 HR mark they laughed and said their average set was 15 to 20 mins.

As a performing band they weren't in the same league as The Who, or The Rolling Stones even. IMO, i hasten to add.

as much as I hate to say it, nobody can beat the who live. but the stones....ehhhhhh....... the reason their sets were so short is so they weren't killed by their own fans.....they worked their $@! off before they got famous.

Rolling Stones concerts are the best. They're so fun.

It's a lot to do with the day and age we're living in. Much of "music" nowadays revolves totally around an image. If that image fits and can be moulded by a record company to rake in profits then it matters not a damn whether they can sing in tune or play an instrument.

Video killed the radio star sure enough. How i used to laugh at that Buggles tune. But it summed it up in one song.

When you have the visual taking over from the auditory in music, it starts to have bad consequences.

It has to a degree yes. But when music videos came along and stuff like that then the look started taking precedence to the actual music which is never good.
