Fast forward to 2208. Assume the same-ish state-ish of the world (not a post-nuclear war or famine / genocidal hell).

What music, musicians, performers of the 20th century will be remembered?

And why?

18th cen, Hayden, Bach.

19th century, Beethoven, Stephen Foster.

You get the idea.

20th?

Beatles - Because they changed rock music forever and wrote quality songs that capture the imaginations of each new generation.

Bob Marley - His music and lyrical genius touches reality in a way that few people have ever achieved. And he is loved and respected by people worldwide in every station of life.

Jimi Hendrix - Because people will still be trying to play like him (and still failing).

Bob Dylan - Because he'll probably still be making great albums long after we are all dead and gone. ;)

Why limit it to rock?

Glen Miller? Benny Goodman? Leonard Bernstein? Aaron Copeland? George Gershwin? Dizzy Gilespie? Scott Joplin? Charlie Parker? Igor Stravinsky?

There's great 20th centurty composers from all genres. I'm fairly sure most of the above will be remembered well.

Muse and Radiohead should certainly be looked at when considering the current state of music. They seem to be a breath of fresh air when there is an overpopulation in the music industry of generic, seemingly talentless bands. Hopefully they'll be looked upon for their varying style of music and continued success despite the fall of record labels and the rise of downloads. There certainly are others, but those are two in rock music that strike me as ones that should be considered.

Certainly cats like Miles Davis and John Coltrane will be remembered beyond this century.

Oh yeah, without a doubt. So will Robert Johnson. How about Sousa?

Hello Cryingstrat,

My Father in law was a dyed in the wool
Sousa lover. I like that music too.

Cheers.
