ok, makes sense now. just make sure that you get it set up good. and flat wound strings are a must for a hofner. also, due to the neck and bridge, you have to buy special strings only available through hofner or lebella. which are another $50.... ahhhh the life of a musician....

Keep in mind that this is MY money that he is not letting me spend, too. I dont get what his problem is.

I guess I will have to find a used CT bass or a used Fender P-Bass.

Bass strings cost a lot more than regular guitar strings (but, do last a bit longer).
Food for thought.

This young lady switched from guitar to bass, a good choice it seems in this case:

His problem may be that you're still living at home. You're problem may be the same problem. Once you've become self-supporting in all respects, all the problems of the world will be yours, and yours alone.
Back on the topic....'doubling' on instruments is a great asset any musician can have. Go for it!! What ever you glean in pursuing guitar or bass will contribute to the other.

Don't know if it would help at all, but I have an Ibanez Gio 4 string that I was going to offload on craigslist since I've upgraded to Fenders and now a Gibson Les Paul bass... I wasn't going to ask much for it, but if you want it, you can have it for the cost of shipping. Save your money for the bass you really want. Shoot me a PM if you're interested. ;)

I'd like to offer two thoughts, during the 70s and 80s I played mainly bass in a variety of bands, metal thru country you name it, I had the chance to play it. As was mentioned, if you can lock into a groove and are dependable you will find gigs galore.

The downside to playing only bass is it is hard to woo a young lady with an acoustic bass, in that case guitar works much better ;-).

Second point, I have more then a couple of basses over the years, some of my all time favorites were not the big dollar basses. I used a short scale Sears Silvertone bass when I played metal, I played an old Vox Sidewinder when I was playing country and alternative, and for pop I usually used an Aria Pro RSB Performer ( with a whammy bar! ). None of these were big dollar basses ( the Vox would be now! ) yet each fit it's part perfectly and allowed me to pull the music forward.

I have been playing mainly guitar since the late 80s but there is always a bass in the house. Right now it is an ebony Hofner B-Bass, yep Hofner's inexpensive Beatle bass model. It has the staple pickups and I can get it to sound pretty close to those old Beatles songs. Keep in mind that Paul also used a Rickenbacker bass.

Anyhow, keep your options open, but definitely learn to make that bass growl.

I strictly play guitar, but if I find myself without my gear at a jam and there's a bass around, it's no problem at all to play. All theory and scales apply, and rhythm is a fundamental component to guitar playing, anyway. It is uproarously good fun! I believe in devoting time to one single thing and being as best as possible at it, but if I had a second or third life, bass and piano would definitely be good fun to take up.

As a young lad I started out on guitar like everyone else, played it for 12 years and was getting pretty good, also singing and being a front man/band leader. Somewhere along the line my musical tastes changed as I was introduced to the blues, jazz and funk. This is where I became interested in bass, and I bought a bass and never looked back. 33 years later I'm still on bass, with no regrets at all. I feel I was lucky to have discovered my instrument.

I would encourage you to check out bass guitar if you have an interest in it. IMHO, it is the best instrument out there, but I admit to being biased. Yes to the recommendations of buying the larger combo or component amps first. 100 to 200 watt minimum is a true beginner bass amp.

$500 can buy you a really nice bass, esp. if you buy used. But do yourself a favor and don't buy anything if you haven't at least played one like it first. Spend lots of time playing at the music store, and try out all the basses and amp combinations that you can find before you throw money at something. Be smart about it and take your time.

Don't discount Fender basses either. There's a reason the Precision bass is the most copied instrument in history. Leo Fender got it right on his first try!

Good luck!

Yeah, like I said I was playing a Bronco Bass. I found a nice deal on a MiM P Bass (used) which I might act on. It's got EMG pickups and its a nice blue color.

Do any of you guys have experience with these pups?

An aside regarding your "Keifer' vid...He once likely could have been seen as 'cute'. Sad that he allowed life to roll over him like a railroad train.

I've got active EMGs in the Kramer. Not bad at all. I'm not a huge fan of battery changing though.

Battery Changing?

Active EMG's sound great imo...but I still say they'll shred your speakers whether you play through "low gain" settings or not.
