I am trying to sell my Blues Jr and Classic Series 60's Strat online.

This dude shows up to my house and turns the bass and mids all the way down on the amp and the treble all the way up. He plays for nearly 40 minutes to make up his mind then complains the amp and guitar are too bright. He also complained that the frets were too small (on a guitar with vintage sized frets).

Ahhhhhhhhhh. :x :x

Just remember that you'll meet some good and some ..... different people when meeting up with folks. It's all par for the course.

He wasn't too bright. Probably never saw vintage frets before or actually coming to see.

The vintage fret thing I could have lived with, but c'mon, who plays with the bass and mids all the way down and treble all the way up with the guitar tones at ten.

He also complained the amp was too clean and refused to let me explain how the master volume/volume relationship worked while playing with the master at 10 and the volume at 2.

I've been trying to sell some guitar amps - some newer, some vintage - on CL lately and all I can say is... yuck! Lots of emails back and forth, lots of dimwits trying to tell me that an amp that has been discontinued can't be any good - so much for all those Fender amps from days gone by...

I've bought guitars from people through CL and become friends with a few of them, at least those my age. I've bought some amps that way, too, but I am not enjoying my selling efforts. I even include links in my ad that allow potential customers to check GC and see the same amps I am selling, but in horrible shape and higher priced, largely to no avail.

Dumbies are everywhere these days, but I don't like them anywhere near my home.

If you're not in a hurry and don't mind taking upto 20% less, then selling your gear on consignment is an option to save yourself the headaches of the "dumbies". (I like this term, you've coined CRGuitarMan! 8) )

If you don't need the cash and are looking to unload gear you no longer use to put something aside in case of an emergency (read GAS), then selling on consignment for store credit is an even better way to avoid the "dumbies".

Cheers!

I always make arrangements to meet a buyer or seller on neutral ground in daylight hours only -- usually at the parking lot of a local music store. I look them over surreptitiously when they arrive and if anything seems wonky I drive off. If they pass the initial "smell test" I'll introduce myself and let the negotiations begin. But I never conduct this business alone -- "Sammy Colt" is always close at hand.

No way would I let some potential turd into my home.

+1,000 !!

I've used ebay, CL and such to sell numerous classic sports car parts through the years, many worth $1,000+.

ALWAYS meet the buyer at a McDonald's parking lot 3 miles from my home (and in Minneapolis - I'm in Saint Paul). I arrive 30 min. before the set meeting, get some coffee and wait in the lot for the buyer.

Afterward, I excuse myself to go inside and use the restroom, buy a coke or a burger and watch them drive away before I head home.

NO WAY am I gonna meet them at my garage with 4 chests of tools, 2 Porsches, a Lotus, a BMW 2002Tii, 3 Italian bikes, 2 English bikes, not to mention my cherished Gas Grill !!

cheers!

I fell in love with the woman I purchased electric lady hands from!

I did have a nightmare selling a PRS SE on gumtree though, understandably its a low end model (for PRS) so I put it on gumtree for peanuts as I was in a hurry to sell it. I still was bombarded with offers at half the asking price. Every little genius who emailed seemed to claim "well you won't get much for a Korean model" which I consider to be snobbery boarding xenophobia, as I found the quality gave Gibson a run for their money. Then I received a message from a guy in Blackburn, with loooooots of questions, I was on the phone for over 30 minutes, but within two hours of that I had sold the guitar for the asking price because BECAUSE THE BUYER KNEW HE ALREADY HAD A BARGAIN!

My longest whinge yet on these forums. Honesty, communication and reliability ARE appreciated by the few, but appreciated all the same.
