I honestly think that it is one of the most sought after guitar tones in the history of the world, and I am attempting to do it myself. So, any input would be great, and any stories as well. Couple of questions, by the way:

1. Did he use a clean tone underneath his Tube Screamer? Meaning without it on?

2. Are texas specials good for his tone? Or are they just slightly overwound pickups that don't do much difference?

There's a lot of threads on this subject already. Do a search for SRV and you'll see all the threads.

+1. Besides, the guy liked to use a roomful of amps (often different ones), from what I've read. Just to buy ONE Dumble wouldn't be cheap.

If you goggle SRV, it tells you about the gear he used.

has a lot on his equipment as it changed over time, including the heavy string gauge and drop- tuning..

And a lot of the tone comes from playing style :)
