Some from the 70s can be backbreakers. I've head of some that push 11 LBs. My Telecaster is a brute, so I'm guessing a lot of guitars can be overweight.

All I can say is: I don't care or, to be exact: I don't care regarding strats.

Just pick one up and if you like the weight .......

I never picked up a strat which even came close to a Les Paul. There might be rare exceptions though.

Generally strats are lighter. There's a big difference to my Gibson Firebirds but I got used to it really fast. I'm curious if a gig will make a difference, which I actually expect.
But then again, I change guitars during songs.

I personally never understood why everybody is so "obsessed" with weights within the strat model range.
It's a strat, that's all that matters to me and I don't care whether it's 7.2 or 7.3 or 8 lbs.
If it's a great guitar, I want to have it .... if I want to have it, I take it and cope with whatever weight it has.

If I recall correctly (and somebody correct me if I'm wrong) the OP is a relatively new player and on the young side...he's trying to find a lightweight guitar (due to his dislike of the weight of his heavy Epiphone)...I had a small, slightly built friend who had issues playing his late 70's Strat for more than a couple of sets, because it just weighed him down too much.

To the OP: obviously, Strats vary in weight due to accruements, type of wood, how dry the wood was when the axe was built, how dense the tree from which the wood itself was harvested, construction techniques, the specific type/material of tremolo block, etc.

I've held/played some Strats that were extremely heavy and others that were just a whisper...it might do you good to go to a store with a large variety of Stratocasters (as well as other guitars) and try them out...There's gotta be one that fits your needs.

Yeah, I'm 14 and have been playing for about 1.5 years (year?). How did you know? Besides being lightweight, I am also looking for a MiA guitar that I could buy with my own money ($500-$600). It boils down to a new Gibson SG Special or a used MiA Fender Strat. Anyway, I guess I'll try to go to GC over the weekend and try out a few Strats for myself. :D

Thanks for all the info, guys.

Yes I know, I was talking in general.
It was not addressed to the OP.
My first three sentences were.

That's your best bet--try everything in the store out and see which one "fits" you best...and try out more than one Strat and more than one SG--even within the same series/model there are differences in fit and finish that can massively change the way the guitar plays.

Also, I know your eye is looking toward a MIA Fender (and there's nothing wrong with that), but don't ignore or disregard a similarly appointed MIM Fender...some of the Mexican Strats and Teles are remarkably well made for a very good price...I use my hecho-en-Mexico Telecaster as much (or moreso) than my MIA '62RI Strat or either of my vintage MIA G&L's. The MIM Tele is my "first grab" guitar almost every time.

In fact, there's a Forumite (his name escapes me, but he's an older, established musician) who touts his MIM Jimmie Vaughan Tex-Mex Stratocaster as the best Strat he's had besides his (original, vintage) 1965 Stratocaster...so you might consider looking south of the border as well...

Let your hands and ears inform your decision as much as your eyes.

Hey S.A. that may be me that you were thinking of as I have said many times that my Jimmie Vaughn Strat comes closest to nailing the tone of my '65 Strat .I picked the Jimmie Vaughn after playing 9 or 10 different Strats, trying purposely not to notice the price or model( I allowed myself to go as far as $3,000).After trying all these guitars I narrowed it down to about 3 but I picked the Jimmie Vaughn because of the definite "L" series Strat tone. The V neck took some getting used to but the guitar is just fabulous sounding,it can sound as clean and bell-like as the old 60s Strats yet when put through an overdriven amp or overdrive pedal it can out-raunch just about anything out there.

BTW: At about $900 the Jimmie Vaughn was about the cheapest one there,so since I had saved so much more money than I was prepared tp spend I bought the Blues Jr. that I had tried it through because they both sounded incredible together.I found out later that Jimmie Vaughn had actually played the guitar that I had bought because it had been part of a Fender promotional display that went across Canada and Jimmie had come into the Halifax show and picked up that very guitar. The Canadian Fender rep is a close personal friend of my usual dealer and the rep took the guitar took the guitar from the display to give to my dealer to make sure that the guitar went to someone who would appreciate the provenance of it and it certainly did.
