I heard they were 7-8 lbs. Is this true?

I'm deciding between a Gibson SG (Special) or a Fender Strat (MiM) for my second guitar.

My Epi Les Paul is about 10 lbs. and feels like a pile of bricks. I hate it. I need a lightweight guitar. I went into GC on Sunday to try an SG, and they are amazingly lightweight. I was so obsessed with this SG - it had a beautiful color and Dimarzio pups, it was just stunning - that I forgot to pick up a Strat. So, can you guys tell me how much one weighs?

Thanks,
Mike

Depends on the wood used. Ader body Strat comes in around 8 lbs. Other woods have and are being used in some models. Squier Stratocasters are often basswood and usually weight a tad less at about 7.5 to 7.7 lbs. Also weight is impacted by the amount and type of finishes. Candy Apple Red being a multi-coat finish might weight a bit more than natural. An American Deluxe Ash Strat in a thin finish will go a few ounces less than alder. The lightest of them are the basswood ones.

This never occured to me but according to the the weigh-in of my Strats, brotherdave is spot on.

  • 2012 Standard, Alder, Candy Apple Red  3.740 kg / 8.2 lbs
  • 2012 American Deluxe, Alder, 3-Color Sunburst  3.369 kg / 8.0 lbs
  • 2012 FSR American Standard, Ash, Transparent Orange  3.559 kg / 7.8 lbs

Cheers!

Strats weigh just the right amount... :P

My US '62 reissue weighed a little less than 7.5 lbs when it was stock. I have since blocked the tremolo (with a stack of quarters), glued an automobile door badge (from a 1960's Pontiac) on the "ashtray" bridge cover, and put a set of Pete Biltoft SP-90 pickups (heavier in construction than the stock pups) in it, and it weighs a little over 8 pounds now...all those little additions of an ounce or ten here and there packed on the weight...

It's still my lightest electric guitar, though.

I once owned a Fender Stratocaster that weighed more than fifteen pounds! It was '79 Silver Anniversary edition made of northern ash.

I've played a few vintage Strats that prolly measured around 7 lbs or so and the lightest one I personally own is a swamp ash hardtail that tips the scales at 6 lbs, 10 oz.

The only lighter guitars I know of are the balsawood Bullets and Affinitys.

Can vary from half a stone to almost a full stone. Most around half a stone.

I have an ash Strat that is 8lbs 13oz. Excellent tone.

An Alder Strat at 7lbs 3oz.

They are kind of all over the place.

The region of 7-8 lbs for a Strat is right on the money.I have 3 MIM Fenders,2 Strats and a Tele. My 2000 lefty MIM Strat feels much lighter than my 2010 Jimi Vaughn Strat for some reason but I figure that it must be the wood.I once owned a lefty 1978 Strat with a black ash body and it weighed in at about 11 lbs. it was incredibly heavy. The weight of your Epi Les Paul is way above average for them as they usually run at around 8 lbs. with the odd one edging up to 9 lbs.My Epi Les Paul Traditional Pro is 7.8 lbs. and even Gibson Les Pauls rarely go over 9 lbs and ones going up to 10 lbs are few and far between.

BTW: Regarding the SG,they are great guitars but they are neck-heavy and "neck dive" is common with them as is with the Firebird and Explorer. There's a strap called the Heads Up Strap that has counter weights that help balance the guitars. The web address is : http://www.headsupstrap.com but I haven't had any luck accessing their site lately for some reason. You can partially alleviate the problem of heavy guitars and neck dive with 3-4" wide straps.

An SG and a Stratocaster are not really very similar. If weight is your only criteria, you may be disappointed in the end.

Play them both and decide which feels, sounds, looks and plays the best, then consider weight.

cheers!

Wow! If I'm not mistaken, a fully loaded LP Standard comes in at around 10 lbs. Arjay, that has to be a record breaking Strat you had there.

Did you contact Image :?:

Cheers!

I did.

But they said the record was held by some fellow who owned the original Fender Strat demonstrator built in the early '60s entirely out of clear Lucite......about 25 lbs IIRC.

This is not my area of expertise, but off hand I'd say that a hen weigh between four and six pounds.

Cheers!
