An age old practice isn't so popular these days so it seems. Find a nice tree cut it down and create something beautiful out of it, or maybe not.

Man, those luthiers are the baddest! Everyone knows violin makers are just the most evil people in town. Hang 'em high, I say.

It's illegal to cut trees in a park or on property that you don't own. For that, I say, throw the book at em. As far as cutting trees down and making wonderful stringed instruments....... thank you to those that do it. Love my guitars!

Doesn't wood have to be aged properly to make a decent and reliable instrument?

Yes, but you have to cut it down to age it. :)

Well as much as I'm a guitar player and I love my own stringed pieces of wood, I'm also a tree huger and I can't help be see this as being just plain wrong.

That said however, I do have to wonder -why- they jumped to the conclusion that this must have been the work of luthiers? Yea, two foot sections high quality wood would certainly be ideal for making instruments...but that could be used to make A LOT of other stuff as well. Why couldn't that be used for furniture? For that matter, high quality or not, two foot sections would even be ideal for firewood...someone to heat their home. After all, maple is pretty darned heavy so it would make sense to cut it into smaller pieces to carry it away. And maple trees -that- large would require some SERIOUS chainsaws and equipment to take them down (trust me, I've tried cutting maple that was already downed...it's a b_tch even with my 20" Stihl!). And "a road suddenly appear cut out of the woods" would seem to suggest some kind of fairly serious lumber jack operation, not someone building guitars or violins. And with all that in mind...89 acres isn't THAT big a chunk of land...how is it that no one heard all of this??? Park ranger sleeping on the job?

Hhhhmmmm... Something sounds a bit fishy about all that to me but either way, just not good all the way around.

Fire wood is a big deal around these parts. Every time the wind blows a little bit the wood scroungers come out in droves to claim the wind fallen bounty. Every now and then some brave hearted thief will trespass on to someones private property or Even public land and help himself to some prime standing timber. They usually end up getting caught and paying a prity stiff fine and sometimes a little jail time for good measure. What ever they are using the wood for, its ill gotten and wrong. Would a guitar made of stolen wood be a really 'HOT GUITAR' or just another AX.
