Ever heard this dude? Dirty blues rock. Nasty chops when it's time to solo. A lot of slide. Might be the next big thing. Very Black Keys/Jack White - ish.

Armadillo would like.

Dropped a new album Jan. 22 (7 days ago). One song is the iTunes free track of the week. The entire 13 song album is only $7.99 right now.

You heard it here first (probably).

Yeah Steven Tyler tweeted about this kid the other day. Very gritty sound. Some might accuse them of ripping off the Black Keys and/or “he’s a wannabe Jack White,” but hey that's no different than in any era when similar sounds pop out of the woodwork when something gets popular. Also apparently they've had a cult following for a while and are known for live shows and all 4 players are top notch MUSICIANS WHO CAN PLAY.

But I'm not a Black Keys hater. I think they are good and sound good regardless of when they were a hipster band or have hit the bigtime.

This Tyler Bryant is really nasty/gritty with his vocals and playing. Very ZZ Top - ish. Lotta attitude. Also sort of classic rock & Black Crowes type sound in there. Actually the guy's vocals sound to me like Bon Jovi, but the overall sound is not "overslick processed."

Free single of the week, like I said, and it prompted me to go ahead and purchase the album.

even that is 2 years old. you gotta check the brand new record. He's probably matured, become more confident, and become less cheesy.

I conclude that "House that Jack Built" is a direct reference to Jack White. didn't read that anywhere--my own original thought. same riff as one of his songs, but this kid Tyler has a good voice. "I'm in the house that Jack Built." Kid might be a "student" of his craft, like Jack.

I'm listening to the album right now and it rocks.

I was at the show where that video was taped. He actually reminded me of a grittier David Bowie. I was pretty impressed by him. My daughter, who was 26 then, didn't like them. So, I don't know what to say about his future potential, except to old farts that keep reliving the past.

I heard a lot about him in L.A. over the summer, and in Memphis last year. I think I'll go buy his album just because about five billion people have told me to. :D

Yeah, from what I've seen, you rock too, but yeah, this dude and this band definitely rocks. As you can see in the video posted above (and as I guess you already know), the kid's "other guitarist" is also lead guitarist quality and they both take solos and they are rockin' IMO. In fact, now that I've seen videos, as I listen to the album, I don't know which of them is taking the solo at any one time. I guess pros who know consider all 4 players to be really top notch musicians.

In short, the album (new one just released) rocks pretty hard. I'm talking I like how it's mixed, pretty raw, lots of attitude, sounds like it was recorded live. Definitely worth checking out. It basically sounds like it could be a new Black Keys album (circa 2003).

I’ve been a fan of them for years, but not once have I ever thought of them as being similar to the Black Keys. I cannot stand the Black Keys, but I do enjoy Tyler Bryants music. I’m unable to find their latest album on iTunes in Canada, so I can’t comment on his latest work though.
Tyler Bryant is often regarded as the next SRV. Not sure I’d go that far, but he does have some serious talent.

My favourite tune of theirs :

I swear I'm not all knee-jerk "black keys black keys black keys" 24/7 all the time, but IMO Tyler's new album does indeed sound similar, at least much more so than anything else I can think of, so much so that I'm sure many wannabe hipsters will immediately criticize it as a wannabe Black Keys. Similar good VOCALS. Both dudes can sing powerfully and soulfully. Tyler sounds like Bon Jovi, however (not that the overall sound is slick 80s pop). Same blues starting point but with a LOT of fuzz and the guitars way up in the mix and a lot of "attitude," which I consider a good thing.

Like with everything I might just be overthinking it. In any event it's a good rock album worth buying for only $7.99.

One thing I really like about the songs is that he seems to be "holding back" most of the time, playing tastfully, but then every once in a while he'll let it go in a freakout solo for just a few seconds (as in that video posted above). I like that style.

Her Wanna is right--Armadillo does like...
I've been diggin' this kid for a few years now, seeing YouTube vids and hearing a song or two here and there.

I personally don't hear a lot of Black Keys/Jack White in him--there's more Doyle Bramhall II or Charlie Sexton (at least in my ear)...But I have not heard his latest disc, either, so...

I like the interplay of two lead and rhythm guitarists...that's something I've always strived to have in my band(s) over the years.

In the YouTube clip above, the second guitarist threw off a little Slash-y vibe...

PS--Funny how the Black Keys and the White Stripes have become the new touchstone in referring to blues-rock bands...it used to be SRV or the Arc Angels or ZZ Top...

I listened to my SRV greatest hits album this morning, speaking of SRV. His instrumental recording of "Little Wing" is one of my favorite recordings of all time. I have been playing it for my children since they were babies, hoping to teach them greatness by osmosis. Now that they are old enough to speak and have a conversation, I tell them flat out to listen to it and absorb the greatness at least 2 times per week.

That being said, I'm going to go out on a limb here and please read carefully: I like Tyler's new album better than the SRV studio tracks I've heard, but it might not be SRV's fault. Here's what I mean. Even the great SRV was trapped in his times, and the studio tracks I've heard on the greatest hits record that I have have an '80s "pop" vibe to them. Songs like "Tax Man" (or whatever it's called) and the others. Sounds very processed and "clean." Whereas this new Tyler record--perhaps because he has access to all of the learning about recording that has occurred in the last 25 years plus the benefit of the currend "retro" trend to try to be proud of making it sound like it was recorded live in one take with all players actually playing together in the same room--sounds much more "raw," "powerful," "slightly raunchy," just plain "kick azz" (sounds, indeed, like you’re hearing a live recording in one take) for my tastes anyway.

I have also read others say that Tyler has "SRV chops." I'm not qualified to say whether he does, but I'm just saying that his brand new album is smokin' and when I put on my SRV greatest hits I usually only want to hear Little Wing and that one that says “if you mess with my baby you’ll see a man get mean.” (sweet little thing?)

Edit: on Jack White, I might be being influenced by the album cover, which I bet you haven't seen. He has dropped the "Justin Bieber" haircut and looks sort of "goth" and jack whitish on the album cover. And I'm convinced that the song "House that Jack Built" is a reference to Jack White. It borrows a riff from a White Stripes song (and totally ROCKS it BTW). :D

The song by SRV that you're referring to is called "Pride and Joy"...

I don't hear a lot of 80's processed sound on SRV's albums, in fact, quite the opposite... The lack of "raunch" may be due more to his personal playing style than the era in which he recorded. "Tax Man" was a weird track for him--an aborted multi-artist Beatles tribute album... :| I'm not sure if he was entirely "into" that recording.

Even though I own a couple of them, I personally think a greatest hits collection is the worst way to familiarize oneself with an artist's work...it may be their most famous or well-known work, but it certainly isn't indicative of everything that artist did...I'd rather hear the odd, less famous album that an artist put out than the tracks his record company knows will get played on classic rock radio. (ZZ Top's 1996 album "Rhythmeen" is a good example of this--a terribly overlooked disc full of great hooks and rhythms).

Tyler is a bit "cleaner" in his vocals and presentation (present album excluded, since I don't know it), but he should not be cursed by the mention of Bon Jovi...he's poppy enough to catch notice, but not slick soulless like that...
