A lot of Page's trademark songs (Song Remains the Same, Dancing Days, etc) - at least in my mind, had a very twangy tone to them. Not sure if this was the Tele or just an EQ'ed LP,

This seems to be pretty accurate as far as I can tell.

First of all, I would go to a guitar shop that sells both brands and try them out. Personally, I would probably get an American Stratocaster, and an Epiphone Les Paul Standard. You could get both guitars for around the same price of a cheap Gibson.

Different tones on each of those archtypes. It depends on what sound you're looking for.

But in EITHER circumstance?

Well....I do know this much.

If I was one of those "I like my pretty guitars...so much I don't want to ruin them by playing them!"....then yes...by all means...go out and blow 3 grand on a Les Paul. Then when you take it out to play it somewhere and it gets nicked or scratched then you'll have to go home and have a good sitdown and cry about it!

On the same token? Strats...same way. Although I think Fender is actually offering its customers MORE for the amount of money, it's still a question of a high dollar guitar getting busted.

Solution?

If you need that Les Paul sound, I'd go get an Epiphone Les Paul for 3-400 bucks, get a nut cut for it and some decent pickups. It'll work just fine. As for the Strat? MiM or a Highway 1 depending on your tastes. Or, if you're not obsessed with brand name, get a Squier and have it modded.

Now, for the price of one expensive guitar that you'll be in dread of taking out of the house, you would have 2 guitars instead that played well, and would probably put in some solid years for you, brand name aside.

Best of Both Worlds! :D

I concur with The Sentry about the Epiphone Les Pauls and the MIM Strats. IMHO, two of the best bang-for-the-buck deals to be found.

With all due respect to Gibson, anyone who pays the outrageous figures for Gibsons either doesn't know any better, or does so because they can.

I've got an original '73 CBS Strat (Ash Blonde) and an original '69 Les Paul Deluxe Goldtop to compare my MIM Strat and Epiphone LP Std against. I offer no apologies for the MIM Strat or the Epiphone.

The bottom line is that you can get something worth owning for no more than $300-400, tops. Do your homework and shop around.

Jimmy Page even played a Danelectro for a lot of his music. Sears used
to sell them back in the days. Lip stick pick ups plastic tape around the
edges, aluminum nut. He also plays a Fender Telecaster, Gibson Les Paul
and that Gibson double neck EDS 1275 you see him use sometimes.
Both the Gibsons have set necks. I would have no problem owning any of them.
