i'll echo the other guys on here. If you're willing to pay good money for a guitar go and try a bunch and find the one that YOU love and just can't stand to leave without!

......you can coax any tone you want from a Tele with a good set of pickups in it. If you like Zeppelin tone, lots of that stuff was recorded
with a Tele.

For almost everything I want to do with a guitar, the stratocaster is sufficient. For everything else, there's the Variax.

The Variax is a pretty cool device. But, I think I'd have to go to Warmoth and build the electronics into a Strat or Tele body and neck, since the Line 6 necks and bodies are dreadful. The electronics are very cool, though.
Fender (IMHO) sshould license the electronics for their own Vari-Tel and Vari-Strat models. It's a much simpler approach than the VG Strat. And
less costly, as well.

Most Gibsons are set-necks, and not bolted on in any way, so the way the guitars are put together is cuts of wood that sort of lock together and then get glued together. I wouldn't pay thousands for a house if they didn't any nails or screws in its construction, so I wouldn't pay thousands for a guitar that doesn't either. Thats just my opinion though, as obviously many Gibsons are durable, even though they are glued together, but I just can't make myself pay that much for a guitar...

I agree on the price, how ever i do have a gibson es 135 that is aweosme, and it does have some finish craks at the joint of the neck and body. But the guitar sounds anf plays great

'Riding with Chet and twangee here. There is no 'best.'

Recently bought a Gibson SG faded brown $700 out the door with hard case and it is a truly, truly excellent guitar, no setup or intonation needed. Delicious.

Does that mean the '91 American Standard Stratocaster will be sold or is even out of favor?

Eff, no.

i bought an sg standard a few years ago and i was amazed how uncomfortable it was to play. My fingers just didn't feel right on that neck (it was the 60's neck i believe) and inlays looked (and felt) a little cheap. If this is your first big money guitar you should really take your time and spend your money wisely. Learn from my mistake because looks aren't everything!

I'd also say to go out and play them yourself. Yes, they are both great guitars with very different tones, but a certain amount of tone comes from your hands and your playing style, and also your amp as well. In fact, I'd even say the biggest factor in your "tone" is your amp, at least more so than any other single factor.

Find the guitar thats fits you and your playing style like a glove. Find one you can't put down, and literally plays itself. When you find one that you just pick up and start playing all kinds of things on very easily, without even thinking what you're playing, and don't want to put it down - ever, get that one.

Both are versatile guitar. Between either guitar, a good tube amp and some skill, you can get whatever tone you want anyway.

Fender's got a thousand different Strats, and they do sound different. Gibson's can be different too, from a ceramic humbucker Gibson that's purely for Metal, which personally I hate, to a very sweet sounding Slash Les Paul. One big difference is price. You don't have to buy a Gibson to get a mahogany guitar. You can get an unbelievable Fender American Special Mahogany (with a humbucker in the bridge and single coils in the neck and mid for diversity and covering the Gibson-humbucker bases) for about 999 at Guitar Center. I mean, that's about 1/3 the price of a mahogany Gibson.

im looking for a led zepplin jimmy paige sound and i know he used a les paul.

Page did a lot of Zep I and II on a telecaster, he used the LP for live shows later. In fact the studio version of "Stairway" was done on a tele. I'd go to the shop and play as many guitars as I could until I found the one that talked to me. FWIW for your budget you could get two American Standard Fenders or one middle-of-the-road Gibson. something to think about.

A lot of Page's trademark songs (Song Remains the Same, Dancing Days, etc) - at least in my mind, had a very twangy tone to them. Not sure if this was the Tele or just an EQ'ed LP, but that's not the typical Les Paul tone. I can get closer to those tones on my Strat than I can with a Les Paul.
