Hey boys & girls,

Just got 2 tix to Blues at the Crossroads 2: Muddy and the Wolf at our Guthrie Theatre in Mpls., a week from Monday (2/4/13).

This show is a series of concerts travelling the country celebrating Blues Greats. It started in 2011 to celebrate the centennial of Robt. Johnson's birth. This time, they're celebrating Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf two of the 'founders' of Chicago Blues.

The Fabulous Thunderbirds, featuring Kim Wilson, join Blues At The Crossroads 2 as the core band, backing greats James Cotton, Steady Rollin' Bob Margolin, Tinsley Ellis, and Jody Williams (taught guitar by Bo Diddley).

The series is performing all over the country for the month of February. Check your local papers/internet to see where it'll be.

cheers!

Quick recap of tonite’s show as we have an early flight tomorrow.

This was Crossroads II a celebration of Chicago Blues, specifically Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf.

Amazing !

Each of the ‘guests’ as well as Kim Wilson w/ the Fabulous Thunderbirds had actually been part of either Muddy Waters or Howlin’ Wolf’s bands back in the day.

The venue was great and the lineup was fantastic ! We were 3rd Row Center with excellent sightlines.

The Fabulous Thunderbirds led off the set with Kim Wilson on vocals and Harp (the only remaining original T'Birds member) while Johnny Moeller and Mike Keller alternated Rhythm and Lead on their Telecasters through 3 numbers. Wilson set the crowd on fire when he leapt from the stage and did a 10 min. Harp solo wandering up/down all the aisles.

Next, Tinsley Ellis joined them on his Stratocaster doing two amazing numbers followed by a duet - Ellis on a mic’d Resonator w/ Wilson on harp.

Next up was Rollin’ Mike Margolin playing slide on his Telecaster… did a wonderful and driving 3 numbers backed up by the Band.

Jody Williams led the next set on his Epiphone Casino… pure economy of motion ! Jody began as a Chicago piano player and was teenage friends with Bo Diddly. Diddly asked Jody why he played piano… was he going to carry a piano to every gig? Was he only going to play clubs with a piano? Diddly suggested he learn the Guitar so he could gig regularly and then spent 2 years teaching him. Jody is now 78 and had to be led to his chair on-stage, but once the downbeat struck, he simply wailed !!

James Big Mouth Cotton came out next and did 3 numbers on the lickin’ stick including a harp duet w/ Kim Wilson ! Wilson was fantastic, but couldn’t hold a candle to James Cotton !

The night was topped off with the entire ensemble on stage for 2 numbers - 3 Hr. show in all.

These guys are a dying breed and there are only so many opportunities left for us to experience what they’ve brought to music ! Be sure to catch them if you get the chance !

Crossroads II Tour concludes with shows in Milwaukee, Englewood, CO and Fairfax, VA in the next 10 days.

Cheers!
