Mrs. Lightnin MN and I go to New Orleans every year for 12 days to attend JazzFest. Because the Player's Championship (which my wife runs) starts the 2nd week in May, we can only take in the 1st weekend of the festival at the Fairgrounds.

But we go for 12 days and one of the best things about JazzFest are the players who play at the Fest during the day (runs 11am-7pm) but then book into local clubs at night.

The clubs don't usually have their April calendars up until after Carnival (Marde Gras) and most are small venues. So you have to visit their sites frequently so that when tix do go on sale, you can snatch up a pair before they're soldout.

Today I scored tix to see Sonny Landreth at the Rock 'N' Bowl on Sun. 4/28 !

Sonny Landreth is a Louisiana boy who plays slide stratocaster... one of the best.
He has a unique style of wearing the slide on his 'pinky' so that he can fret and chord behind the slide, he also has a great finger-pickin style. Amazing player - I have several of his CDs, but have never seen him live - Very Excited !

Here's some samples:

cheers!

Lightnin, you'll have a great time.
Wearing a slidd on the pinky isn't unique, it's what Sonny does behind the slide that's unique. He also has a great and unique right hand technique.

He played at a local "Concert Under the Stars" at the township building year before last up the street from me. It rained all day before the concert and only about a hundred people max. showed up. He played like he was playing to 10,000 people. He was awesome and hung around after the concert to sign stuff and just talk to everyone. He's and incredible talent.

Here's a couple photos I took at the concert. Have a blast!

This black Strat was previously fitted with three DiMarzio humbuckers!

Sonny also played slide guitar with shred master Joe Satriani:

Right On... been there many times !

Lived in NOLA for 2 years at the end of the '80s and have pretty much visited every year since.

There are a several great spots in that area (Uptown/Carrollton); Tipitina's, The Maple Leaf, Jacques Imo's and one of my personal favorites: Snake & Jake's Christmas Club Lounge.

We stay in the Marigny, one block outside the French Quarter (1 Blk. from Esplanade Ave.), but it's just a short hike to the St. Charles Streetcar which takes you to Clairborne St./Carrollton Ave. before it turns onto Jefferson Hwy. From that stop, it's just 4 blks. up Carrollton to the Rock N Bowl.

It's a shame that most people's impressions of New Orleans are limited to the French Quarter or worse, Bourbon St. We spend about 15 min./trip on Bourbon St. - there's a whole city to explore and discover, and let's face it, there are only so many Hand Grenades a person can consume in their lifetime ! ;)

cheers!

My wife's niece and hubby live there and are in an Ozzie tribute band called Mrz. Crowley and they rock. Hope nobody minds the plug.

I try to get down there as much as possible, usually every couple years. I'm not a big drinker but something about that town brings it out in me...

Saw the Neville Brothers at Tipitina's one time. Now that was an amazing show!

Walked all the way from the French Quarter to the Maple Leaf one night after having a few absinthes in Pirate's Alley. I forget what band was playing but I do remember they were good. Even had the piano player show me a lick before they went on (that I did remember!).

Gonna have to check out the Christmas Club Lounge next time I go there.

Another great place is Vaughn's on Dauphine in the Upper Ninth Ward. Kermit Ruffins still plays there on the regular I believe. He's the heir apparent to Louis Armstrong's throne. Check him out if you get the chance...

Enjoy!

Yea... there's something about it being legal to walk down the street with a cocktail that brings it out in all of us...

I bet it was... saw them once at Snug Harbor on Frenchmen Street, really too small a venue for them...

Holy Sh*t Batman !! That's got to be a good 5 miles one way, maybe more... guess that absinthe really works !!

The closest thing to a 'House Band' that the Maple Leaf has is: Papa Grows Funk - http://www.papagrowsfunk.com , they are some serious musicians with John 'Papa' Gros on the B3 and June Yamagichi on guitar. They've played Monday nights there since 1999.

Gonna have to check out the Christmas Club Lounge next time I go there.

Quote:
Snake & Jake's Christmas Club Lounge has actually been listed as one of the Top 10 Dives in the US ! (and... YES... I have the Tee Shirt)

It's really just a Tarpaper shack, smack in the middle of a residential neighborhood... they don't even have a sign (they have a Christmas Wreath), but the interior is decorated for Christmas... ALL YEAR 'ROUND ! -

It's just so low... but the people there are great !!

I'm gonna have to check it out this spring... Thanks !!

Enjoy!
