This isn't one of those 'are Weber speakers any good' threads...

Consider it more of a shout out.

I have a Vox AD15vt modelling amp which I love using but it has always sounded slightly vague to my ear - hard to describe, but basically not quite there. It was the same regardless of what settings I used. I had put it down to the modelling, just thought it was a case of close, but no cigar.

Anyway, I started looking into a replacement, or maybe mods, when I stumbled across someone who had experienced the same thing and had contacted Ted Weber before his passing and asked about a replacement speaker. Ted had recommended he try an 8" signature series ceramic Weber model. So I gave it a whirl too.

It arrived this morning, already broken in, so I swapped it out, and have been playing for seven hours, no lunch, nada. The little Vox amp has come alive - the sound is generally much, much tighter, richer, and a lot warmer. There is more separation between notes, and the point at which it breaks up in overdrive is right in the sweet spot I needed. Somehow the amp now sounds 'bigger' at comparable volume to the factory speaker too.

Simply put, if I'd paid four times what I did, I would have still been a very happy man. At the price I paid, and with the excellent service and fast delivery to the UK, I am ridiculously impressed.

Ted really knew his stuff and it looks like the folks at Weber are carrying on in the same tradition, so cheers guys.

Oh, and just in case you were wondering, I have NEVER felt like writing a post like this, let alone actually started one. It really is that good.

I don't "feel the love" for Webers personally but they build a few pretty good speakers and I've installed many for my clients.

I have nothing bad to say about Weber or their speakers. I have used EV SROs, JBLs, Emi's, SUNN's, Jensens and more and Webers are right near the top of that list!

I just installed a Weber 12A125A Alnico in my Tweed Deluxe 5e3 clone and I'm seriously impressed. One of the best speakers I've had in any of my amps. Nice tight bottom end with serious high end note definition and nice balanced midrange . The more I play it, the more I like it.

Tone is seriously subjective.

I've used a few of the Weber speakers and have nothing bad to say about them. I would definately buy from them again. I had a 12A125A Alnico in my 5e3 clone as well and switched it out for a 12A150T Alnico. I used the 12A125A in a Champ clone and I'm happy with the tone of both amps.

Quite happy with the four AlNiCo Sig 10S speakers that came in my 5F6A clone kit. I'm considering buying some Weber 12" speakers to replace the stock speakers in the Crate 4x12 I have for my next amp build.

I bought a Weber Signature series alnico 8s for my Bugera V5. The bugs speaker had great chunky defined bottom but it took my Tele bridge pup and the bug tone dimed to get any high end, especially at lower volumes. The Weber had great definition but almost no bottom to speak of. I tried the two speakers together and it was magic. So now I have 2 8" speakers and a tonal spectrum that lets me use my neck pups and still have great tone. I find some speaker mixes provide unique voicings.

Time to add some freash content to this thread.

Recently received my new Weber 10" alnico hemp coned speaker. 10A150H. 50 watts, 8 ohms.

This is one of the finest speakers I've heard. It is not fully broken in but, it is already singing very sweetly. I have it in my SCX2. 15 watts and a 50 watt spealer with a 1 1/2" voice coil gives me a lot of clean headroom. In fact, with my amp on 10 and my Tele wide open, there is just the beginning of a good crunchy sound. That is on the clean channel. Going to other amp mods can get me plenty of break-up.

I hear notes and harmonics never heard from my guitar before. Each of the 3 setting on the Tele sound like new worlds to me. Full of subtle voicings never heard by me before. From the small inexpensive alnico Sig8S speaker to my pricey alnico 10" hemp cone, articulation is what catches my ear the most. Even in overdrive there is a certain clarity that 'factory' speakers do not possess. My Red Fang, a 10" Brit voiced alnico, is one of the best speakers Eminence makes, IMO. Designed together with Genz Benz, Emi took its 12" RF and made the 10". I've heard the twelve and it does not resemble the celestion Blue Bell it supposedly is a copy of. The Weber Blue Dog, has a similar tone but holds it together well when things crank up. I will be getting a Blue Dog hemp cone for my HRDll. I'll order it nest week.

I have some nice Emi speakers. Lil Buddy, Red Fang, C.Rex and the 8" hemp cone. All have good tone but none has the articulation and definition of a Weber. The choice of voice coil size, ohms and watts, sometimes basket color is a custom persons dream. After getting one of their custom speakers, it will be hard for me to return to factory brands. They have lost another customer to Weber. The articulation of Weber speakers may be off putting for some. I know it is making me clean up my act. There is no mush to hide in.

I've got a Bugera V5 and have the same problem with the stock speaker. Though I agree that having different speakers together can definitely make some magic, I'd like to get just one 8" to replace the one that's currently in there. Would you recommend a different Weber than the signature alnico you got for yours to cover more ground?

The alnico Sig8S is in the thousand dollar EC Fender Champ. More bottom develops after breaking in but although nice and percussive, there is no real thump. It is an exceptional speaker. For the same price, 48.00 there is the 8" Blue Pup with a chimey-er Brit voicing. If they throw a hemp cone on one, I'll buy it immediately.

So, Amer or Brit. voicing is an option here. Although it will be their regular Vintage series that will give you more magnet and voice coil for more low end. So minimally you will want a 125 (1 1/4" voice coil). There are three. All described as loud and aggressive. The 8F125 is same cone as Sig8. 125O is no ribs for earlier break-up and the 125T has more ribs for greater treble response. It is not until we get to the 150's (1 1/2 voice coil) that we hear bottom end mentioned. There is one model and used the "T" cone although it is not called that, so more bottom and extended highs. This is their most robust 8". It comes in alnico or ferrite.

I would go with the 8F150, five dollars more than a 125. With increased low end and the "T" cone you will get the widest spectrum 8" speaker they offer. Fender choosing Weber for their EC Champ was one way for them to make that amp sound special. It offers an articulation few other speakers can.

Thanks for the advice, I really appreciate it. I took a look and the 8F150 looks good. It seems to emphasize the low end, which says a lot for an 8" speaker. Being as it's a 25 watt speaker going into a 5 watt amp, I'm going to guess it will have a lot of headroom before it breaks up.

The only other one I was looking at was the British Series AlNiCo Blue Pup 8. It says it's bright, jangly and chimey, with moderate low end. Not sure if I need all the low end the 8F150 provides for my Strat. Seems like either one would be great though. What do you think? Plus the Brit one is only $44 vs. $77 for the other one.

Forgot to mention, the Brit is 15 watts, which is also a little closer to the output of the 5-watt Bugera...

I was recommended by CJ from Weber to get the Alnico Signature 8S for my early Vibro Champ. While I don't think there is that much option for that amp, I hope it will sound about the same as the Oxford 8EV that originally came with the amp. I can't accurately compare the speakers as the Oxford's cone is torn in about 4 different places. I haven't really heard anything bad about Weber though.

Weber is known for having informed people who can help people select the right speaker. CJ is top man in that dept. If the Oxfords were exceptional speakers, then they can sound about the same. Make sure to break it in before deciding. That speaker thickens and opens up only after some good lovin'. It still has plenty of sparkle out of the box.

The Alnico Blue Pup 8 will probably do the trick. I want one of these speakers for my 5 watt H&K, I am just waiting to see if they come out with hemp cones for them in the near future. I need to talk to CJ and get the scoop. Never spoke to him. If there is none in the future, I will pick up the 8'' blue pup to take over from my Sig8S. The alnico will sound great with your strat, especially the middle one. Save the money and get that Pup. The other one is ceramic with more thump than you might need and a top end that is different than the Brit voicing, especially with those 7 oz. plug magnets. They have a certain magic to them.
