If you could take a time machine and go back in time once each decade, which live show would you see in the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and 2000-2009? It is acceptable to pick a show that you actually did see the first time. In other words, you liked it so much that you'd see it again as opposed to picking something else you didn't see.

I'll go:

1940s: Dave Brubeck
1950s: Buddy Holly
1960s: The Doors in a small club or Grant Green in a small jazz club
1970s: Led Zeppelin in early '70s; 2nd choice - The Stooges
1980s: Nirvana (yes, they were doing hard hitting shows in small clubs from 1988-1989); 2nd choice - Sonic Youth
1990s: Nirvana (late 1993 version on In Utero tour, such as the MTV concert); 2nd choice -- Nirvana in 1991 (edit: 3rd choice -- 20 year old Britney Spears; 4th choice -- 20 year old Christina Aguilera)
2000s: Black Keys around 2003 in a small club

Woodstock would have been quite an experience.. I seem to recall a few members mentioning having been.

I would also catch the Zeppelin Royal Albert Hall show.

1970s: Allman Brothers (again) original band.
1980s: EVH
1990s: Jeff Buckley in Manhattan's East Village
2000s: Beatlejuice w/ Brad Delp (Boston) again. RIP Brad!

None of the above. I would go back to June 18th, 1967, to see Jimi Hendrix perform at Monterey.

Well, since we get only one choice/decade, here are mine:

'40s - Tommy Dorsey Orchestra (w/ Frank Sinatra)

'50s - Miles Davis Sextet - Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderly, 'Philly' Joe Jones, Paul Chambers, Bill Evans.

'60s - Blind Faith - Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, Steve Winwood and Ric Grech

'70s - Led Zepplin

'80s - R.E.M.

'90s - Red Hot Chili Peppers

'00s - Foo Fighters (maybe Pearl Jam or Nickelback) - saw Foo Fighters at JazzFest 2012 - great show!

Anyway, that's my list... though it could be 100 times as long !

cheers!

1940s: Glenn Miller & Orchestra
1950s: Elvis (with Scotty Moore on guitar)
1960s: The Beatles.
1970s: Chicago (before Terry Kath died).
1980s: Rush.
1990s: Little Texas* (They were a pretty cool country/rock band back then).
2000s: I have no idea... Sorry...

* I know a USCG buddy who went to high school with a few of them. One day he told us all about it, and naturally, we all called "B.S." and stuff like that... Well, the next day at work, he brought in his 1982 H.S. yearbook. Sure enough - there were the H.S. photos of some of the members of Little Texas!

Good thread!

1940's--T-Bone Walker
1950's--Muddy Waters (w/Little Walter on harp) (second choice: Buddy Holly)
1960's--Howlin' Wolf w/Hubert Sumlin (2nd choice: Rolling Stones 1969 "Gimme Shelter" tour, gigs recorded at Madison Square Gardens for the "Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out" live album)
1970's-- ZZ Top, especially the "Worldwide Texas Tour". (second choice: Waylon Jennings, especially right before "Luckenbach, Texas" was released. Third choice: The Faces, with Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood and Ian Maclaughlin and...)
1980's--early SRV, around '83 or '84, before the drugs and alcohol got out of hand or later SRV, after he got sober. (second choice: early, early Fabulous Thunderbirds, when they were the house band at Antone's in Austin).
1990's--early Black Crowes (again--I saw them on the "Shake Your Money Maker" tour, back when they were taking cues from the Faces and the Stones instead of being a jam band) (second choice: Joe Ely, in his David Grissom/Davis McLarty era, right after Bobby Keys left the group...I did get to see them like that once. Third choice: Pearl Jam, right after "Ten" came out; I didn't appreciate them then, and I'd like to have seen them in that format)
2000's--White Stripes...I caught on to them right before they broke up. (second choice: early Black Keys; I like their newest stuff, but it would be cool to have seen them in their early days).

40s - Leadbelly. anywhere. that would've been amazing.
50s - Buddy Holly. obviously.
60s - Hendrix... I'd almost say the ventures or dick dale, but I guess you can still see them play if you're in the right areas...
70s - jan 10th, 1978. sex pistols in Dallas, TX. that must have been intense.
80s - Accept in Osaka , Japan the night they recorded "Staying A Life"
90s - Reading Festival 1991 (nirvana, sonic youth, dinosaur jr, the godfathers, etc)
2000s- if i could go back in time knowing what i know now, i'd try my hardest to stop that psycho from shooting dimebag. :(

Thanks. Early White Stripes was my 2nd choice for 2000s. Some would say it's cliche to pick White Stripes and Black Keys, and it's become especially "trendy" to criticize the Black Keys since they have become popular and won grammies and now fill stadiums and their songs are in commercials. But both groups make (or made) guitar based rock music that is extremely interesting and both are/were famous for amazing live shows. That's my choice. By the way, I *have* seen The Black Keys (in 2011) and Jack White (with "The Ranconteurs") live (also in 2011). I too missed the whole White Stripes thing in the early 2000s. Would have been cool to see either of these bands in the early 2000s. Thankfully we have youtube.
