Trust me -- you're better off buying a stand-alone 6G16 reverb tank than trying to retrofit an Excelsior amp with the necessary circuitry.

That's going to run you about $700 or so. For less than half of that you can get a pretty darned good reverb pedal here.
Check out the vids.

Or just get a used DRRI
Seriously It's not worth it. I built a Reverb pedal from BYOC. Nice sounding pedal. None of my amps have reverb tanks and I rarely use the pedal. With a good cabinet, speaker and amp design I never miss the reverb. I just use the natural reverb in the room and the resonance of the cabinet.

I have to disagree with that one. Yea, my old Bandmaster sounds sweet thru my home built 2 x12, but to this day I STILL miss the 'verb that I get on any of my other amps...even my Bugera which has digital 'verb.

That said, to the OP, yea...instead of messing with the Excelsior, I'd just get an outboard unit...digital or even outboard spring...far cheaper and you can get some great sounds.

Just my own opinions,
Jim

No-Nothing here...

But I thought Spring Reverb Tanks needed to be mounted horizontally... not vertically, to work properly.

At least that's the way it is in my Princeton Chorus Amp.

If so, mounting it on the side wouldn't be an option.

cheers!

Like I said, "I" don't miss it. Nothing hurts my ears more than a signal drenched in reverb.
I had a 74 Bandmaster with a stock Fender cab and never missed it. Same with my 74 Champ, Egnater Rebel 20 and my 5e3 clone. But then again, I rarely use pedals either.

Bill, I'm surprised you didn't build a clone. Doesn't Weber have one?

I'm even more surprised you didn't buy this reverb pedal. I mean it is named after you and everything.

I have filed a multimillion dollar copywrite infringement suit against Strymon. Should go to trial by this spring. My attorney says I have a "pretty good" chance of winning.

All this talk of reverb. I decided to plug my Strymon Bluesky into my Fandango along with the Keeley Compressor and the Tech21 California. I cranked the dwell up on the Bluesky and added a big helping of compression and lots of California gain and gave the Strat the old Dave Gilmour, Division Bell routine. Sometimes I can get a big grin on my face. This is one of those times. Fun.

Just got around to jumping the channels on my 5e3 clone, holy sheet, I'm still smiling. No reverb or pedals needed.

I always jumper the inputs (actually, I use a "Y" cable) of my 5F6A clone. It too sounds great without reverb (finger jointed pine cab just like Leo built them). But because my home studio is quite dead, I use just a touch of reverb to bring it alive. The BDRI on the other hand, is quite dead with its MDF cab and requires a reverb. Some day I may get a custom cab for it. I love the amp but the cab sucks. :(
