Seeing/Hearing Lee Michaels & Frosty at close range is part of the reason for my hearing impairment! :?

The Masters of Reality employ an overdriven B-3 in some of their songs and one fabulous example is the song "The Blue Garden" from their eponymous album. They have a sound that's an amalgam of Cream,Deep Purple and Uriah Heep for their heavier songs and their lead singer sounds a lot like Jack Bruce-no surprise that Ginger Baker sits in on drums for them at times.

The High Dials have my friend Rod Argent on B-3 on one of their songs from their "Holy Ground" album.Rod along with his cousin Jim Rodford was the founder of The Zombies and after they disbanded he and Jim went on to form Argent with a couple of ex-Zombie members. His inimitable organ work is prominent in their monster hit "Hold Your Head Up".

A couple of years I had an old Hammond that was refered to as the baby B-3 bargained for at just $100 and it was in good working condition but the Missus went into hysterics about having something as big as a full sized organ in the music room, especially since I already had 3 keyboards there already so it never happened. If I had my time back I would've sneaked it in and just said nothing because she never ventures into my Inner Sanctum anyway and I always have it closed off with a huge roll-up bamboo curtain.

Jim Rodford and Russ Ballard are playing cool guitars and it looks like a Fender Super Reverb is being used by Russ

Guitslinger,
I'm glad you brought up Argent. (Thanks for the vid Solidbody). That song brought back some memories from my sophomore days. I remember wanting to play this song in our little basement band because I could handle the bass line and our guitar player had a handle on the guitar part, but we couldn't find an organ anywhere except Church and they weren't going to let us borrow it.

Always impressed by the depth and breadth of your knowledge Guit thankyou for sharing. Keep your hands warm Spring is just around the corner... :)

Great posts guys, luvin the vids, don't know why I asked if it was still an instrument in use with today's artists on the radio, I guess I'd only hear it listening to a Blues/Rock/Prog station, I think it mostly is rooted in 60's thru 70's and maybe early 80's popular music, possibly synth's took over and the Hammond took a back seat any vids I've pulled up seems to be 60's n 70's, I kinda had in my mind Steely Dan had that vibe but pulling up more vids it seems Donald Fagin was a Fender Rhodes player ( another great sounding keyboard), looking back I think the fact that when we were kids we had a pump organ in the house don't know how we came about having one because neither of my parents were musicians it just sort of appeared and us kids were let loose on it, definatly had that vibe sound and pulling out all the stops just stuck in my memory how fantastic it sounded, got to be where I got this Hammond bug from, probably ended up as firewood, a crying shame when I think about it, anyhoo here's another vid, greatest Hammond solo's, sort of confirms the era of the Hammond

Ok here's my 2nd pick. The Allman Brothers would not be the Allman Brothers without Gregg and his B3. His instrument does not jump out like some in the other videos, but if you try to cover their music without it you can tell its missing.

The guitar work ain't sloppy on this one either...

When I think of a Hammmond B-3, I think of Jon Lord of Deep Purple playing the song "Lazy" Theres a great vid of it on Youtube, live where he alternates between the Hammond and a grand piano !!!
Or I think of Uriah Heap playing "Circle of hands".

I agree that nothing sounds like a B3. Synths can really only aproximate the sound of air blowing over real reeds !

But, the B3 isn't limited only to Pop/Rock as mentioned so far.

Up here in Mpls., we were blessed to have one of the greatest Jazz/Blues B3 players for many years until his passing in '01 - 'Brother'/'Captain' Jack McDuff.

Starting with hard bop and soul jazz in the early '60's, Jack had a very unique style primarily due to the fact that he started playing music as a Bassist and switched to the Piano/B3 in the late '50's. Later as the popularity of jazz dwindled, Jack morphed into the Blues.

In one of his first bands, he gave a young unknown guitar player his start... George Benson. The two would collaborate many times in subsequent years.

Jack played with many of the greats like; Gene Ammons, Kenny Burrell, Gene Harris, Sonny Stitt, Roland Kirk, Jimmy Witherspoon, Grant Green, David "Fathead" Newman and many others.

Known as Brother Jack McDuff since his first album, in the late '70s Jack began wearing a blue yachting hat (like Duke Ellington had) and acquired the nickname 'Captain'.

Jack and his wife Cathy lived in Mpls. and was a big part of the local scene. If not away recording or touring, Jack often played 5 days/week in the local clubs... the Dakota, Artists Quarter, Blues Saloon, etc. Jack was a really friendly guy and would sit and chat with you whenever he recognized you. Those who knew Jack really miss him.

Another great contemporary B3 player is John 'Papa' Gros, a native of New Orleans and leader of the Band Papa Grows Funk (soon to be disbanded :( )
