Talking keyboards here  :) Hammond's etc have they all but disapeared from today's music? going through a belated Steve Marriott phase for the past few months and really can't get enough..Small Faces..Humble Pie just blow's me away I hadn't given them a listen too much earlier, apart from Steve being blessed with fantastic vocals, guitar and harmonica playing a huge amount of glorious Hammond organ just fills their sound don't know if Steve "although listed as keyboard player" played on all the tracks, a couple of examples, anyone heard any new bands lately with a similar setup or is this sound firmly rooted in the past

I've always loved the sound of a Hammond but the man for me is the late great Jon Lord.

My teacher had a new Boss pedal last night that made his guitar sound like a B3. Very weird. It's a new pedal that Boss is featuring at the NAMM show this weekend and my teacher will be doing demo's. So Boss must think there's a place for that sound in todays music.
I agree about Steve Marriott, the guy was great and worked his butt off on stage.

I don't think the Hammond sound has disappeared, just Hammond organs. I know three keyboard players who have sold their Hammonds in the last year, usually because they could no longer justify taking it on the road. Even a split C3 is a heavy beast, difficult to transport, prone to damage and if a synth/workstation can do a 99% impersonation of the sound then it becomes an easy decision to leave the Hammond in the studio and take a Korg or Roland on the road.

That sound will never die, it'll just migrate into VST plugins and samples. I love the Native Instruments B4 Hammond plugin! And my Roland JV synth does a nice attempt at an overdriven C3 at a fraction of the price and weight.

Yeah Gilgafrank I confess I just used Hammond as the generic term for that lush sound, portability being a big factor I'm sure there's lots of alternatives, maybe it's just that I don't tend to listen to radio too often these days that I don't hear much of that " Hammond" sound

I feel compelled to chime in on this. IMHO nothing can duplicate the sound of a Hammond B3 through a Leslie 122. All thru the 70s the band I played with helped our keyboard guy carry one of these beasts to every gig we played. As many as 3 times every week we loaded the B3 and Leslie..as well as all our other gear. We were called crazy for doing it, but that organ was a definitive part of our sound at the time...and at the time there wasn't an acceptable substitute. I'm pretty sure that we weren't the only group to do this...and fortunately none of our guys ended up with back problems or a hernia to remember all this by. Those were the days...and the sound of that B3 still sounds sweet in my ears.

Dan

I've heard several modern digital keyboards do a pretty respectable interpretation of a B3 but what I haven't heard is a decent keyboard amp that can authentically replicate the sound of a tube-fired Leslie. Nothing sounds as heavenly as a 122 or a 147.

Classic Hammond worthy mentions. Steve Winwood "Gimme Some Lovin'" "I'm A Man"
Felix Cavaliere in the Young Rascals and the solo in "Good Lovin". Hammond is now Hammond Suzuki and it is really getting its' act together with their portable digital B3 version. Hammond also makes Leslie cabinets these days. They used to be separate companies.

That Leslie still tips the scales at 125 lbs.

Ouch!

One of the keys guys I play with uses a Porta B and the sounds are pure Hammond without the weight :
