The Creepy factor doesn't come from the children - they are just children innocent beings. What I find creepy is the regime of absolute coercion, and what kind of trauma these children possibly past through while preparing. The children have done what could be said impossible for their age congrats to them but also I can't help feeling sorry for them.

DPRK children playing guitars are far better than them playing with weapons.

They never seem to look at their fretboards either, probably forced to do their practice at night, after work.

The only thing creepy about it to me is the size of the guitars as compared to their tiny bodies and tiny fingers.

I was thinking, if they are this good now, when did they start playing.?
1 or 2.? it reminded me of the animals you see at the circus.
and their tiny hands on the neck, with a max stretch of 3 frets.
i'm glad they can play, but i hate to think of what they had to go through to learn.

They are one of the coolest things i've seen in a while, Can you imagine their skills if they stay with it.....unimaginable....

I agree they would have immense skill if they stay with it. But these children are probably forced to do this not because they are interested in it.

Yeah i dont doubt that, It would probably be discipline that would serve them well in a democratic society.

I think it's incredibly impressive, and we need to remember that in the classical world at least the large majority of those who make it to the very top started well before they were five years old. So there's method in the madness.

On the other hand. When I was a kid I learnt the violin for a while and was taught by a slightly modified version of the Japanese Suzuki Method. Small kids playing in big groups was a striking characteristic of that teaching technique, and I especially remember a TV programme that showed a huge room full of Japanese five year olds all playing the Mendelssohn violin concerto together, which scared the pants off me at the time - I was several years older and wa-a-ay behind them.

And yet. The Suzuki Method has been remarkably unsuccessful at producing top line players, and the few who've made it tended to rebel against it at some crucial phase of their education.

In other words, the battery chicken approach to music training gets you a certain distance quite fast - but not all the way.

Cheers - C

EDIT: typo

Huh interesting Ceri, This explains your vast building and no doubt playing experience with strings. I wholeheartedly agree and envisaged an ugly road to those skills and discipline at such a tender young age.... hence "if they stick with it". Although the odd child prodigy like that young mexician kid that has had recognition over there may enjoy and embrace it from day dot and i can only marvel at the skills such a kid would have at 20 let alone 30. It would have to be ground breaking i'm sure most would agree! and how cute are they all when there all in a groove all dipping there heads like that!!! ha ha ha.... There like little fluffy ducklings in a cartoon....Hillarious!!

Same kids, just a little more grown up. Notice there still in unison.

You can rest assured that anything that comes out of North Korea is very carefully screened and censored so that-God forbid-the rest of the world wouldn't see what life life is really like in such an opressive regime.Free speech isn't in their vocabulary and is a concept that's entirely foreign to the people living there. Those who dare speak out are quickly muzzled and hushed up,usually in a most barbaric way.Their Dear Leader or whatever he has forced the people to call him, took over from his despot father and is carrying on his father's hardnose rule of his subjects.

This session was without a doubt staged to show the rest of the world how cultured their children are and how the government encourages children to learn. This video is just cynical propaganda put out to mask the terrible and often brutal oppression that goes on in North Korea. They wouldn't allow the truth to be filmed or broadcast.
