So Beyonce lip syncs at the inauguration, and folks are up in arms, but we don't mind when she and others lip sync in paid concerts?

I hate to deflate anyone's balloon, but almost all the SuperBowl halftime artists are lip syncing. Yes, even the Who did, and this year's acts will as well. Too much riding on a RF dropout or problem with an amp, although I think it would make it more exciting.

This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.

Beyonce IS this year's SuperBowl halftime show. :?

Ha! That put a grin on my face! :D

Hey, GTG, these days you can post a video of your singing and dancing right here on the Forum! I'm expecting sort of a cross between Britney and Fred Astaire... 8)

Cheers - C

Great expectations. I am a little light in my loafers. Trip the light fantastic. I'll work on singing Whoops, I Did It Again to the choreography of the Astaire hat rack dance. I hope the reference to Fred wasn't blatant ageism. :D 8)

I've been watching Fred, Ginger, Gene, Bing and the rest of them in movies all my life - which probably means it was ageism, yes!

Now that's when movies WERE movies... 8)

Well then. It's not my national anthem, and I wouldn't be too fussed about it if it was. But am I right in thinking the Star Spangled Banner is customarily rendered, as it was composed, in 3/4 time? Nobody on this music related Forum has yet mentioned that Beyonce sang it to an orchestration in 4/4. Shocking, huh?

Just to keep the discussion on a stricly musical footing...

Beyonce had a good reason for doing what she did, per what I've heard since this thread started.

But what about the band - geez - why did they have to fake it too?!?!

I did not listen to it. That is shocking, more so that it being prerecorded. Next thing you know it will have a hip hop groove and choreographed dancers. I hope not in my life time.

I like the way you think. I'm ready to go. I just need to motivate the singer and drummer.

It has been worse. Remember Roseanne Barr and the crotch grab and spit? This customization has been going on for years. What gets me is the marine band lip syncing. Next they will be lip syncing and foot syncing the dance moves. That's my plan for my video.

Did Not remember it..... Nor did I ever ( need ) to see or be aware of it. Had I done so would have required me to rip out those brain cells responsible for storing the visually vile act.

Thank's a lot..... definitely a moment in white trash syndication I did not ever need to know about....

Here's some lip/guitar/drum/bass syncing in the rock genre. Total backing track. The song starts and none of them are playing. Cool studio song and cool video. But I don't think these guys can actually play the harmonics intro live. The main chords are Cadd9, D and Em. 3 5 7 if you want to just power chord it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rldAzc7pVvk.

Now, when Nirvana did their ridiculous Top of the Pops thing, it was greatness and they were, of course, mocking it.

But this Puddle of Mudd performance purports to be serious.

By the way I respect the band for doing the the song, which is about a divorced father and he's singing about his young son (true story for the lead singer). The studio video is awesome and touching: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJJsoquu70o.

What's sickening is to watch a performance of this for MTV spring break, where one can see dozens of pretty bimbos who have no clue what the song is about bobbing their pretty heads. Many of them will no doubt be future heartbreakers and stealers of children's time with their fathers under feminist "no fault" divorce laws, which is the root evil cause of the need for the song and video. Very little brainpower in the crowd here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0H90nuyb9XQ

Finally, a band like Puddle of Mudd really illustrates how good Nirvana and Kurt Cobain were. I like Puddle of Mudd. Fun band. Put it on; drive to the beach. I can’t listen to Nirvana 24/7. But Puddle of Mudd, Staind, 3 Doors Down, etc etc etc etc (all those bands signed by Fred Durst between 2000 and 2002) are CORRECTLY derided as “post grunge” ripoffs. They are POP sounding compared to Kurt. This dude sounds a little like Kurt, vocally, but he plays only rhythm and even the lead guitarist does not venture too far into much of a solo. People complain about Kurt not being a the best guitarist, but he did play solos and he put himself out there and he did write interesting riffs like in "Heart Shaped Box" and others that were way more than C D E (on the A string). In fact, the sound of Nirvana, even the studio albums, is “naked” compared to the 2000s “post grunge” stuff like Puddle of Mudd and Staind. You hear Kurt’s guitar, for better or for worse, loud and clear. It’s like he’s playing next to you in your living room. If you listen with good headphones, it’s like that. Nirvana truly achieved a “live” sound on their albums, even the “polished” Nevermind album.

Kurt would have HATED the sound of Puddle of Mudd, Staind, and all the other imitators who came after him, not only because they are unoriginal, but just looking at the SOUND… because they have the exactly same “slick” sound he distained, really not much different, at all, from the hair metal in the 80s. Even with very crunchy and “thick” power chords, it almost sounds “too good.” It’s “pop” the same as overprocessed Britney Spears.

Puddle of Mudd is like “Nirvana lite” for frat boys. (also lacks the art rock poetry in the lyrics).

Now, I like the “Blurry” video. Good video. Good song.

The same thing happened four years ago--Yo Yo Ma (don't accidentally call him Yo Mama, he gets upset) mimed playing the cello for his part in the inaugural performance, because the instrument would not stay tuned in the cold wind and weather.

...and as far as backlash, Britney Spears has done it her entire career, several of the boy bands have been exposed for doing this...it's rampant in pop music, and unlikely to change, because it's all image and fluff for those types of performers.

It goes back to the expectation of the audience. One Direction's fan base would easily accept it, whereas Jack White's audience would eviscerate him...I can't imagine Nora Jones lip syncing, but Miley Cyrus or Demi Lovato or Justin Bieber? No surprise at all.
Is audience there for the talent or for the "show"?

The weird thing is, I think Beyonce can actually sing...it has to be the "cold weather/bad for your voice" issue.

As usual, Armadillo is correct. Not defending her music in general, but the freakin' Navy band (or whatever the name of the band is...the "president's band") said it was a mutual decision because of the elements and because they had not had a chance to rehearse together.
