Primarily known as Rolling Stones' founding members, Mick and Keith are also talented solo artists.

Is there really a need to embed each and every possible Stones You Tube performance, be it that some are just horrible resolution. Not to mention that once we click on a Stones Vid we always have the opportunity to click on the option which gives us a list of Stones Vids.

Not a rant here but I think it would serve the OP much better if this was mostly a discussion with of course a few vids ( of excellent quality ) embedded.

We were talking about Richards, Taylor, Wood and Jone's Blues roots and why the Stones sound has survived 50 years ....

Thank You ..

Agreed.
A vid or two pertinent to a discussion, is cool. Reams of them is just thread littering, and gets really annoying for those that want to follow a discussion.

Please don't do it.

I have noticed that a few people have recommended Keith Richard's "Life" as a good way to find out about the Stones. As I wrote earlier in this thread Keith Richards is trying to rewrite history and give the credit of forming the Stones to himself and Mick ,this is absolutely and positively fantasy.Anyone who has been following the Stones from day one knows that it was Brian Jones who started out the Stones and rented out the rehearsal space to audition prospective band members. He wasn't even going to take Mick on until Keith insisted that if Mick couldn't join then he wouldn't join either. The band was always on the marquees as"Brian Jones and His Rolling Stones" until they cut their first recording.Keith was a fairly decent guitar player when he joined but it was Brian who really showed him the intricasies of playing blues.Brian was an incredibly gifted musician with the inate ability to master any instrument that he picked up.Anyone who wants to read a factual account of the formation and early years of the Stones should pick up a copy of Laura Jackson's biography of Brian Jones,"Brian Jones-The untold life and mysterious death of a rock legend".

BTW: Bill Wyman's first biography "Stone Alone" is also well worth getting into.

All biographies and autobiographies rewrite history to some extent. Both kinds of narrators are unreliable. Biographers weren't there, and rely on hearsay and corroboration. Autobiography is tainted by personal POV, and in Keef's case, a memory battered by drugs and ego. I know his book is a very lucid and intelligent read, but you make your own memories the truth.

Besides, who started the group is rather academic - it's what they did that people care about.

As far as finding out about the Stones, I'd rather read from someone who was there (more or less in Keefs case...) than a journalist who interviews lots of people with even hazier memories.

Off topic, but on this point, Bob Dylan's Chronicles is probably the most enlightening of all the reams of myth and adoring puffery written about him over the decades.

Well, after 10 years of listening to rock music and 7 years of playing guitar, I finally just discovered The Rolling Stones! I mean, it's not like I was completely ignorant. But I never really thought anything of them because I never heard anything aside from the songs they play on the radio constantly. How could this have happened? Well, my parents are avid Beatles fans. I have every Beatles album, but they just got Rolling Stones greatest hit albums.

But recently, I asked my band (Texas 99) for any song suggestions for a couple of blues gigs coming up. The drummer, who doesn't really listen to any blues, suggested a few songs by The Rolling Stones. So doubting that it could be anything we could play at a blues gig (remember, I've mostly just heard stuff like "Miss You"), I looked the songs up. And here's what I found...

I was definitely not expecting that, so I've been going back and listening to all the songs on the earlier albums. I think I get why Keith Richards shows up a lot in blues articles now! I have way more respect for him as a guitar player now that I've actually listened to him. I can't believed I missed this earlier, but hey, better late than never!

Anyway, we ended up adding several Stones songs to our setlist. And don't tell my parents, but I think I like them more than The Beatles!

Better late than never I say. BTW the Stones are the greatest rock band ever, The Beatles are the best pop band ever so I see no conflict here. :)

Don't forget Little Red Rooster and Not Fade Away.

And yes, Brian Jones is one of my idols but he was a complete a** hole.

I saw a movie not long ago. Charlie Watts in Ireland or some such. Documentary on the Stones in about '66. It showed everybody together, but Mick and Keith were composing and kicking around ideas. What struck me was the excellence of Keith on the acoustic and his quick mind and creativity. Also, his sharpness shows when he is with old blues guys. He plays it cool, but he seems to be an eager kid with loads of talent.

Interesting stuff, and I've been on a Stones kick for about the last week now. The worst was my epic SRV kick of four years ago (listened to absolutely nothing but Stevie for three months), and while this isn't that I'm still making good headway trying to catch up on the last fifty or so years. :) I've also managed to get my hands on some early Stones records on vinyl, which I'm going to be really excited to hear once they get here. I also got some original Hendrix on vinyl while I was at it!

I've been re-enjoying Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf lately too. I've been familiar with their music from the day I started getting into blues, but it's kind of cool listening to them again after hearing the Rolling Stones. In fact, here they are sitting in with Muddy Waters. It's kind of annoying how the camera guys keep showing Mick ordering drinks instead of keeping it focused on who's playing, but oh well. It's still the best quality Muddy Waters footage I've seen.

Modern camera technique seems to be for ADD people. There seems to be no artists eye involved. Modern editing is more of a curse than anything, IMO. At least in the hands of monkeys.

This video was pleasing to watch and it was a great capture of a Muddy performance. Really enjoyed it.

It seems that a lot of forum members reported complaints about boring Youtube embedded videos.

I'll stop posting Youtube threads to prevent future "troll" warning messages from the admins which eventually lead into a possible ban.
